so there is a few products on the market now that are specifically designed to fix pigments to models, MIG pigment fixer and Secret Weapon Miniatures pigment fixer both spring to mind

for years people have been using things like varnish, Isopropanol and enamel thinners to achieve what it is these products are designed to do, i guess my question is what is it that is used to make these products that separates them? does anybody know what these actually contain and why that makes them better?
im not asking about peoples opinions on the results these products produce as ive seen for myself, im more looking to find out what they are made from

Usually a small amount of some sort of acrylic resin, in addition to the high flow fluid (usually alcohol).
