Hi, Dakkaperts.
I'm sure this is Page One, Book One of: Big Boys' Book of Basing, so here we go.
I'm looking to rebase my Imperial Guard army, and what I'm looking for is a forest feel. Currently my bases resemble mud and static grass, with a few leaves thrown in. Naff, really.
I could search the 'net, but I don't know what I'm looking for. Does anyone know what type of modling product I can use to create a foresty feel? I assume flock, or something, but I like the look of that 'tall grass' stuff that Games Workshop sells in their basing packs, but they're £20+, and I don't know how much you get.
Any suggestions of where to shop?

Have used these guys on several occasions, really good variety and quantity for not too much cash.
One kit would do an entire elite army I would think, you might need a second one down the road for Guard!

Gale force nine do a bunch of basing materials you can get from most independent hobby shops. Woodland scenics do nice tall grass. Bark like that which you get in playgrounds can be minced up to look like rotting fallen wood. The plastic plants you can buy to decorate aquariums or terrarium can be cut up to make little tropical looking plants

The gamesworkshop basing packs... do include some nice materials.. but.. well the amount is tiny for the price.
The rocks they include are just shards of slate. I'm fortunate enough to have a front yard covered in slate rocks that are each about the size of a space marine bike (ish), a couple of those in a few plastic bags smashed with a hammer against a harder rock.. theres an old granite slab in the back yard.. i used that.
Resulted in a bag full of smashed slate of all sorts of sizes, very very similar to the GW basing kit, only with a greater variety of sizes.
(it left marks on the slab don't go smashing slate this way on your mothers lovely patio paving or something like that haha!)

Yeah, when I travel I'll have to keep my eye out for stone I can process into basing materials. Thanks for the idea!
