A bit miffed that boyz and battlewagons and bikers have their formations, but I can't seem to find one for the trukks I love so much

Speed Freekz Trukker Tide

Composition: 5-10 units of Ork boyz mounted in trukks

Special Rules:
~All aboard yoo gits!: Trukks have their carry capacity increased by 6, with the additional models clinging to the sides!

Any to-hit roll of 6 against the trukk strikes one of these hanger on's instead - resolve to-wound and armour saves as usual. Boyz clinging to the side of a trukk cannot fire their weapons - they need both hands just to hold on! If a trukk goes flat out or Kareens, all hanger-ons make a dangerous terrain test to represent the risk of falling off and tumbling to their deaths. If a trukk explodes, count the boyz hanging on to the outside as being in base contact with the exploding vehicle. Any blasts, vehicle explosions etc that hit the trukk also strike all hanger-ons

~Rolling Scrap Heap: As Grot Tanks from Imperial Armour 8. The trukks in this formation are ramshackle piles of scrap, and any shot is as likely to blow off a hunk of useless metal as to strike something important. Hits against the trukk, though not against any models hanging on to the outside, have a 5+ invulnerable save.

~Crash and Burn: If a trukk from this formation would collide with another unit as a result of Kareen on the ramshackle table, inflict 1d6 S5 AP - hits on that unit before exploding. If the unit is a non-vehicle unit, the trukk does not stop 1" away, but continues its full range of movement, tank shocking any units it passes through (friend or foe) and inflicting hits as described above. If they collide with a vehicle, stop the trukk as usual and inflict the hits, then move the targetted vehicle 1d6" in the direction the trukk was moving. If the vehicle collides with other units, resolve the same effects just described as though it were a trukk that had rolled Kareen (though it doesn't necessarily explode at the end of the move!). Vehicles destroyed by the collision explode/wreck at the end of their 1d6" movement.
(Errata: Wrecks may be pushed just like other vehicles, they simply won't take any damage)

The only thing I really strongly disagree with is the 5++, as these, no matter how many Orks are clinging onto them, are still just Trukks.

The 5++ isn't because of the Orks, it's due to the ramshackle, scrapyard nature of the vehicles - and simply copy and pasted from the Grot Tanks of Imperial Armour

But they are still just Trukks, right? With this logic, why would I ever NOT take these things if they get a free 5+ invul? There's no restrictions or additional costs on apoc formations now, so this is, in effect, a free invul save.

An alternative could be a cover save in the style of Ork bikers. They'd usually be getting 5+ cover from a Big Mek anyway, and the 5+ invuln comes from the precedent of another unit so I don't think it's too bad an idea.

They need *something* to get them down the board, especially due to the prevalence of ENORMOUS blast templates in apocalypse.

Dread Mob formation gets random gubbins, Green Tide gets bonuses etc, and they are all just vehicles and boyz. Adding something to the vehicles is hardly a new concept.

I agree with giving them some form of protection, but this is not the right way to do it.

Think about it from an opponent's perspective, as some Trukks have an invul save and some do not, yet none of them have any functional or visual difference.

I don't understand how that is different from say, the Dread Mob or Green Tide formations? The deff dreads in the former and the boyz in the latter all have special rules (FNP, IWND, cover etc), yet look exactly the same as dreads or boyz which do not.

If you could explain that for me maybe I could understand where your coming from.
