Hey mates, after taking a break from 40k to work, I have decided to jump back in and from looking around, I have always wanted to try out a Drop Pod list as it is very unique to what I am used to. Anyways, I am just looking for tactical advice on how to run a drop pod army in this edition. Any advice, tactics, tips, or anything you can give me related to either of these lists would be much appreciated, especially in this edition since the New Space Marine Book came out, so Im sure there are a lot of good ideas out there that I could try running, as the Marine book has a lot of stuff to chose from. Such as:

* Which Army Tactic/Special Rule would fit best in a drop pod list?

* Which Units would work best in a Drop Pod List?

* What Support units would work best in a Drop Pod List.

Appreciate the help mates.

Very handy to know that the average die roll on a 2d6 is 7, so when you place, be at least that far away from the table edge to have it 'usually' go your way.

Load up on them sternguard, and tactical marines.
5 man assault squads with 2 flamers and 1 combi flamer can take a drop pod for free if they lose their packs

If your going for a drop pod list, you have to play aggressively. Its better to take the chance that you might mishap, then put your Pods too far back especially against a shooty army like tau and eldar.

Decide which side of the board is weaker, and commit everything there and work your way across.

For support units: Whirlwinds are super cheap for what they do to counter hordes. Allowing your sternguard and tactical squads to field melta to counter heavy armor.

one interesting thing I've seen. Is one guy took drop pods for his devastator squads. but he then deployed his devastators and had two empty drop pods come down latter. The reason for it? Just so he could have everything on the board the first turn.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

i've found that dropping your anti armor, anti MC troops first turn, focused on a weak flank is good, my second wave is ALWAYS 2 assault squads with x2 flamers, combi flamer in a free drop pod to really attack troops

Having run a pod list before, some advice I will give is have extra empty pods to offset the initial drop. For example 2 dev squads with lascannons an 2 empty pods.

I'm not saying definately do it this way, but it's an option.
If you combine this with a tactical squad for home objectives you get 3 pods. If you max out at 7 pods your entire army is on the field.

Also I would suggest ultramarine tactics personally. Maybe Calgar and aim for the scoring unit trait.

Just thoughts.

Salamander chapter tactics are great for drop pod assault, if not very fluffy. Those flamer assault squads get pretty scary when all of their flamers are twin-linked, and if you take Vulkan He'stan then your meltasquads get more powerful too.

I've found space wolves do this really well. Whether it's a full squad of GH with special weapons, some Wolf Guard in terminator armour or even empty, you can really cut off parts of the board at will. Take out the weak side and putting a wall between you and the enemy, meaning he has to come to you while you take out 1/3 of his army.

We'll lock this one then, please do feel free to continue the discussion in the existing thread.
