Subject: Good alternatives to Citadel Primer?

Human Auxiliary to the Empire

Hey guys, so I'm looking for white primer. The GW Citadel version though is $15. I was looking around and I found some stuff called Armory for $6. Is it any good?
I also heard you could use Krylon Primer. How does that work?
Thanks for the help.

GW primer is horribly overpriced for what you get. Personally I use Krylon camo series tan as a white primer stand in and it works great. Adds more depth than a pure white primer.
Most of the time now though I use Vallejo white airbrush primer.
I do know quite a few people who use Armoury and swear by it so I can't see you going wrong if you choose to use it.

Army painter is good. You can get coloured primer. For example i got a desert sand spray and use it to paint all my tanks. saves a lot of time. pretty cheap too.

Primer seems to be a popular topic as of late! Buying hobby brand primer is a waste of money. Krylon is a good brand that I've used for years, ant it saves money so you can buy more man-dollies. If you really want to go budget, Wal-mart Color Place works just fine, too, and it costs 97 cents a can.

Do you have an airbrush? Vallejo Polyurethane primer is awesome value, goes on thin and smooth thanks to the extra control from an airbrush rather than rattle can. You can brush it on too but it's not as ideal. If you're planning on staying with the hobby, an airbrush is an excellent tool to have if you don't already have one. Comes in white, (light) grey and black, along with some colours like red, green, yellow etc. though I've only used white grey and black, and like them all.

I've been looking into this myself. I've used Citadel, Privateer Press, Rustoleum and Quickcolor. I use black though so I don't know how much help this will be for the OP.
GW Citadel primer has been the best in my experience and most expensive. Works on anything I've ever sprayed it on dried fast with a smooth layer. $15 a can
Privateer Press primer worked ok. It was passable on my GW plastics but wouldn't stick to finecast or metal. $10 a can won't use again.
Rustoleum Works on everything so far. Longer drying time. Reaper Bones white plastic or whatever it is took 2 days to dry while Raging Heroes resin and metal dried in less then 4hrs. Works fine on GW plastics. Less then $5 a can and a little thicker then GW or PP primers have to be careful of the details while your spraying.
Quickcolor I've only used it on GW plastics and metal so far but worked great. Good coverage and faster dry time then the Rustoleum. $1.27 a can.
Rustoleum and Quickcolor are available at Home Depo which is nice since there are more of those then hobby stores. I hope this helps someone out there.

Army painter is good for the different colors but you end up paying as much as you would fit a van of citadel. That being said, I find that you get more paint out of an army painter can, maybe double if not triple the spray time

There are literally dozens and dozens of threads on this - so for even more information from the community, I would suggest a search....(hmmm....we really need a sticky on primer, thinning paints, and which airbrush to buy....).
I have used a lot of different primers, my favorites for a variety of reasons are;
1 - vallejo airbrush primer - great coverage, very thin, afforadable.
2 - armory brand rattle can - good thin coverage, comes in three colors
3 - Rustoleum 2x cover spray primer - a bit thicker, good coverage, comes in three colors, cheap.
Really, do a search - you will get TONS of info on this....
best of luck!

i use army painter colored primers. Especially on things like vehicles or tau armor or marines its great because as long as you prime them with any bits that obstruct the spray removed, you can use it as a base color as well.
If you look at my gallery theres a purple Riptide. The purple is the primer Alien Purple from Army Painter, and it looks great and saved me a ton of time.
