Hey all, This question is probably something thats come up a lot (but frankly I dont get on with the dakka search function... sorry )

I'm currently re-painting my Deathwing models, but next up is the Ravenwing.
Up untill now I've been pretty happy airbrushing thinned citadel paints. But Have been keen to try out Vallejo Model Air, I'm somewhat low on the greys and blacks that I would use a lot of with Ravenwings scheme, so am looking at buying some VMA, maybe the basic colour set, maybe a handful of selected pots. I looked at the colour chart online, but its of little use mostly becuase everyones monitor shows colours differently. Theres no local supplier of vallejo for me, so I've got to order, kind of blind.

My question is which particular greys from VMA line are going to be of use to me for sheer black bikes? (read; not blue-black, or any other off black... sheer, neutral black)
Also will my stock of Liquitex Airbrush medium be suitable for thinning them further? or is it really worth getting vallejo's tiny bottle of thinning medium?

'Ain't nothing crazy about me but my brain. Right brain? Riight! No not you right brain! Right left brain? Right!... Okay then lets do this!!

I really like the usa greys and you can prime with the german grey.
I bought the full set of vma and no regret at all!

Thinning can be done with a lot of stuff, no need to get vallejo for that

There are several greys, I am not sure which might work.

I can say their black is VERY black.

On thinning, you should be able to use most thinners with them.

I use both VMA and minitaire paints - which while the VMA has a much better military range, the minitaire line has a lot better overall color selection.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Yeah I noticed that theres a few sets of grey in their range.... made it a tough choice tbh.

The basic 16 colour set comes with VMA50 'Light Grey'
aswell as black and white.
VMA97 is 'base grey/grey primer'
VMA119 is white grey
VMA51 is barley grey
VMA 52 is german grey
VMA56 is black grey
VMA55 is grey green
VMA 54 is dark grey blue

... theyre all definatly grey

theres also 'sea grey' in dark, medium and light.
US grey,
US Grey Light,
USAF Greys,
Nato Black,

Picking which ones will go together isnt so much the problem, but more which collections of greys look blue tinted, sheer black, green tint, red tint whatever

Edit;
I'l likely get the 16 basic colour set. Just to get some other usage out of the purchase down the line on other projects.
But with Black, Light grey and white, I feel that I'l atleast need a dark and medium grey if I'm going to avoid mixing them up out of black and white all the time. And I'd like the colour to be kind of uniform across all my Ravenwing's hardware.

Looking for a dark grey, VMA56 Black Grey, looks to be more blue than VMA 54 Dark Grey Blue (on my screen atleast) ... this is part of the problem I'm facing; The digital colour swatches shown for each colour don't seem like theyre going to be very representative of the actual colour of the paints?
