Recently been toying around with Kharn and his troops. As we all know the berserkers are fairly overcosted this edition and are difficult to use because of two main problems:

A. Setting up an assault often leaves you vunerable to at least one round of shooting, and in a world of ap3 weapons this generally means death for your warlord and squadmates.

B. Assaulting is risky business, the turn is actually happens you'll have to suffer overwatch and attempt a charge which can be very inconsistent.

The good news is that Kharn and his squad (280 total) REALLY make assaulting profitable. He easily crushes terminator squads alone and can tango with a surprising # of MC's. Point for point I can't think of a more potent assault character.
Khorne isn't as aggressive as you'd think granting him fantastic anti-psyker capabilities and a CSM Lord Body accompanied by a 5++. A successful assault on a vehicle with his attacks alone have a 90%+ chance to turn into 7 close range melta shots.

Getting Kharn into combat is paramount.

Charging 18'' ahead with a Rhino is just suicide. He will die and you'll probably lose. Ironically the key to using Kharn and his squad is defensively. Utilizing the armies large amount of 48'' weapons to knock off your opponents troops is key. Getting first blood is generally very easy. Deploy both rhino's extremely defensive. IF possible out of LOS, if not 4+ cover is key. Force opponents troops off the table, crippling their ability to hold objectives. Don't be afraid to use the Autocannon CSM's empty rhino to tank shock troops.

They will be forced to either lose or attempt to kill your troop's moving their effective models up the board. Hold your position until you feel Kharn's rhino is going to make his charge during the next turn.

The turn before the assault you should have Kharn and berserkers deployed with the Rhino inbetween their assault target. Block los as best as possible forcing focus fire if any at all. Remember they are fearless. It's really important to pop smoke on your rhino this turn aswell, ideally hes at full hull points as we really don't want a wreck. Exploding is acceptable. This minimizes the fire Kharns taking and sets him up really effectively.

Next turn simply move your rhino enough to clear a charge path and assault. Assaulting is FAR more effective than shooting with pistols so if you are going to charge for sure but the roll needed is 9+ don't try to weaken the squad and make your charge roll even harsher.

I love this army and really enjoy trying out underused models. People often under estimate Kharn. Remember he always hits on a rerollable 2+, (first round of combat only) important when you roll 1's.
Use his 2+ DTW.
Be disciplined, if your opponent isn't holding objectives don't be tempted to charge up the field with anything. Wait them out and just win on points. I've had games where Kharn does nothing, his threat bubble holds off opponents models from moving up the field.

Good for you keeping Kharne in the mix. I don't see him in enough armies these days, or enough Khorne for that matter.

I will probably start taking him again once I begin fielding my Spartan Assault Tank. In fact, I already know what units he's going to lead and what armies he's going to mercilessly slaughter.

Nothing like having Kharne in a challenge, you jut know that no matter what it is.....just pick it up pretty much.

Eh, I used Kharn once and he ended up in a challenge with a Daemon Prince. One stomp was all it took. Dude needs some eternal warrior

YES! Another kharn and Khorne lover! A shame you went a little weak and took a Tzeench DP! Haha!

I have also had quite a bit of luck with a combat army...though I have no REAL long range stuff! But near enough no one expects combat armies in today's meta.... So when people see Kharn in a land raider, 2 Khorne DP's and a BT you can physically hear their stomachs turning!

Kharn for the win!

When I saw that guy's stats and calculated it a bit for myself, I realised how crazy he is. He can easily carve apart vehicles and most characters die in the first round of a challenge.

You run him with Berzerkers, would running him with MoK CSM work as well? I currently have plenty of CSMs but Berzerkers are still on my to get list (Tons of models unpainted, not buying more 'til it's done!)

It reduces hitting power but adds more tactical options, for example if there is something you really do not want to charge (Hammernators jumps to mind) you can add a few extra shots and kite it.

I acutally just used kharn and 2 squads of 10 zerkers this saturday and carved up some IG. They had a lot picked off enroute but opponenet didnt know what to say when I split off kharn and had him tear through his leman russe's and for 160 a fantastic hq

The lacking of EW is his greatest downfall, but thats why he's in a LR. Also, yeah there are a few things he can't take, but you should know what his capabilities are befroe you just throw him at something. Usually it dies though.
