I've been looking around for a planet my deathwatch character could have fought on, and I was thinking about making up a planet but I'd prefer if he fought on a planet that is already known, I don't want the planet to have a big population, because I want my character to sound as realistic as possible.

P.S. he fought on this planet alone.

Why would he have been on this planet alone?

He's a Space Marine, they aren't solo-operatives. The Deathwatch functions in small kill-team units to achieve a specific objective.

What did he fight on this planet? What was the goal to the action he was involved in?

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

What Chapter is he originally from? He could have fought on some planet that that Chapter controls.

Is he a Deathwatch Scout? I remember reading some fluff about individual DW assassins that infiltrated societies while searching for their targets

Think of something clever to say.

Have him be from the red scorpions chapter, have him be one of the marines that was in one of the thunderhawks that was shot down in the enemy lines on Beta Anphelion IV, have him be the sole survivor of his squad or separated from his squad for a while until the rescue, or one of the pilots etc....

Established background already to take ideas from, including a scenario where he was alone for a short period in enemy lines, that are infested/being taken over by tyranids.

Personally I feel you're better off making up a planet. Tying your character to an already known location only makes the galaxy feel smaller.

Besides, even heavily populated worlds will have huge tracts of empty land that were deemd uninhabitable.

Right yes, this happened before joining the deathwatch, he is an imperial fists tech-marine, his squad died on the planet after they were surprise attacked by either Iron warriors or Tyranids. Now the planet can have a big population or they would have noticed.

There are examples of Chapters owing certain Warmasters and Crusade Leaders a favor and allowing single Marines from their ranks to assist in operations(the latest Gaunt's Ghost books).

Also depending on what your chapter is, there are other debts owed and small forces of Marines elsewhere(the Space Wolves attached to one Navigator House comes to mind).

Theres a specific Deathwatch marine called a Kill Marine which are assigned to make planetfall alone to deal with problems if they arent worth the warrant of a whole team. They're typically better Deathwatch marines and make for interesting characters. Bare in mind OP fluff wise they are supposed to be there for small encounters, if it goes planetary scale they would send in more marines.
