Hey all,

I've been out of the 40k scene for almost a decade now. Back when I was active I had 2,000 pt Iron Warrior Army. It was poorly painted and constructed, but it was the best a 12-13 year old could do! Well, ten years later and I've come into a bit of cash and realized I had the itch again. So I went across town to one of the local shops I've started visiting and picked up the CSM battleforce and a Chaos Lord. Initially I was interested in the Night Lords, but I've settled on the ol' IW for nostalgia, ease of painting, and the firepower theme. With the Battleforce, I got some bikes I'm not going to use, as well as some Possessed I was unsure about including in my army.

Here's a 1,000 point list I've put together. Please let me know if I've wrongly accounted for anything. I included all point values for everything as the new 6th ed codex does things a little differently.

HQ
Lord – lightning claw, combi-bolter, jump pack, Sigil of Corruption
Total – 123 points

Troops
Chaos Space Marines – five additional Marines, meltagun, flamer, Champion's melta bomb [ten total Marines]
Chaos Rhino – extra armor, combi-plasma, Havoc launcher
Total – 227 points

Chaos Space Marines – five additional Marines, plasma gun, missile launcher [10 total Marines]
Chaos Rhino – extra armor, combi-plasma, Havoc launcher
Total – 289

Elites
Possessed – Champion's two Gifts of Mutation [five Possessed]
Total – 150 points

Heavy Support
Havocs– five additional Havocs, two missile launchers, two lascannons [ten total Havocs]
Total – 210

999 points

Is my Lord okay? Do the Possessed belong, or could those points be better spent elsewhere? Do Rhino-backs work? I'm pretty set on having one Havoc squad armed to the teeth and I think the Marine squads look good (the one with the flamer and meltagun is equipped with bolt pistols and CCs, for the record).

Thanks for helping a newbie out!

From what I have read so far they dont like the point break down to be like that. Check out the sticky. Not trying to be a bother though. Also a free bump. Hope you get the 1000pts rounded out. I got all the Chaos from DV that im not going to use. May get some ideas. Sorry I am no help.

When I look up I think of the great Waaagh! in the sky.

Its OK, and for what you have its a good start, but if you do get more into it I would try to go for a Heldrake (or two or three) terminators, at terminator lord and obliterators

If Slaanesh is the God of Sex, then why does Tzeench have a Thousand Sons

Hail Champion RoWo91, welcome back to the Traitor Legions.

1. The Chaos Lord.
a. Who does he hang out with? The possessed? His jump pack may not be very useful.
b. Consider the powerfist/lightning claw combo-- it's expensive but versatile, and gives +1 attack due to two specialist weapons. The AP3 lightning claw may underperform against 2+ save targets.

2. Mechanized CSM squads
a. Consider doubling up on the special weapons rather than going for generalist squads. 2x plasma is very powerful.
b. Consider dozerblades-- they'll make the rhinos much more mobile for 5pts... but given the choice of havoc launchers i suppose you may be holding the rhinos backfield.
c. I dont think extra armor on rhinos is worth it, because usually they end up being glanced to death or exploded.

3. Possessed: As cool as they are, these guys are not very good for the points cost... : (

4. Havocs: Looks good to me.

General: If you want to keep with the mechanized/iron warriors theme, consider a predator and/or vindicator. Generally, speaking, if you bring only 1 or 2 tanks, the enemy will easily prioritize their antitantk weapons. If you bring 4 or 5, that choice becomes harder for the enemy general.

Happy hunting.

Formatting is fixed, thanks for the heads up.

Obliterators are definitely on my mind for the future, as are Terminators. I feel like the former is a necessity for a Chaos army.

I intend my Lord to keep up with the Rhinos, hanging around with the first Marine squad with the flamer and CC weapons. On the other hand, he could be with the Possessed but then the jump pack becomes a waste of points...

I definitely want to get some use out of the Havoc launchers. I take extra armor just because it sounds good, so it's something I could sacrifice.

The Possessed came with my battleforce, and I'd like to get some use out of the models... I was worried they wouldn't be worth much. I figure they make a good bullet sponge at least, distracting from the Rhinos?

Are you going for competitive or fluffy?

If iron warriors fluffy then think about warp smith and fiends? Possessed don't really fit...

Everything in the list at least looks at least useful, though you'll need a delivery system for those possessed.

I second the suggestion that you double-up your special weapons though. Redundancy is very important, and your squad being able to always fire both of them at the same time maximizes their efficiency. Having the plasma gun and the rocket launcher in one squad, for example, means that half the time you'll be firing your missile launcher, your plasma gun won't be doing anything. On the other hand, 2xmissile launchers or 2xplasma guns will allow you to get the most out of both weapons as soon as you're in range. 4xplasma guns will give you excellent mid-ranged anti-infantry fire, and can also glance most light vehicles (AV12 and under), while your havocs sit back and light up anything too heavy for your CSM to handle.

Of course in the end it's up to you how you want to run your list, but if I were in your shoes (and I'm no pro, mind you), I would make both CSM squads 2xplasma guns, and make the havocs 4xlas-cannons. Dropping enough havoc models from the squad to afford the change if you go over your points limit. A barebones squad of havocs with 4xLC's is 155 points. That leaves you with enough left over points to potentially replace the possessed with a Forgefiend (which is awesome, and would fit your list well), or a Maulerfield (not quite as awesome, but still fits your list's fluff and can be dangerous with its 12'' movement).
