Subject: Transferring the relic while locked in assault, possible?

I am trying to understand if it is possible to end in base to base contact with a friendly model of a unit that is locked in assault, without joining the assault.
example that we ran into was my DA terminators were locked in close combat with a squad of zombies that were in possession of the relic. On his turn he deployed a squad of plague marines and ended one in base to base contact with the zombie that possessed the relic without joining the assault. The next turn he then proceeded to retreat with the plague marines and the relic in tow.
Maybe I am missing something but I can't find rules around coming into base contact with a squad in assault which allows or denies this action.
Can anyone help me understand this?
Thank You

You cannot place a unit that is not an IC or locked into assault closer than 2" from another unit.

It seems he can. You can drop the relic at any time, and or nothing stops you from moving into BTB with a friendly unit. Edit: Oh? ima look for that one in a sec. (what page is it?) But he still could voluntarily drop the relic 1" away form the carrier at which point another unit moves in to btb with it and carries it at that point.

Umm yes you can.
The only restriction is that you can not move within one inch of an enemy model.
A model (Model A) can be in base contact with a friendly model (Model B), even if Model B is in CC provided Model A does not come within one inch of an enemy model.

np then, im obviously remembering a different edition or somthing.
Makes alot more sence to not let different units touch each other to keep hoards from cross pollinating and such but whatev.

possibly confusing fantasy, where you have a 1" rule for all units, not just enemy, unless in combat.

Wouldn't be a horrible rule. I keep winding up with 11-man and 9-man Tac squads... (I *really* need to paint more)

And thats realy easy considering they have at least 25mm bases.
