Hello painting community,
Is it just me, or does anyone else sometimes have a hard time painting certain models in our armies? Or just models you don't have a hard time painting but just don't like the model?
I for example have been painting a Blood Angels Drop Pod for my Dreadnaught, but I find myself annoyed with it. It's strange because I usually handle painting anything pretty well, and though sometimes the models might look a bit off, I'm generally satisfied with my results. I've painted vehicles as well, so I'm not sure the size of the model has anything to do with it.
What about you guys? Do you ever have models you don't like painting?

i think we all hit a block from time to time, whether its a personal thing, a model thing or just motivation.
put it down, take a break or paint something else, then go back to it
for the record the only thing preventing me doing a space marine army is that i hate building/ painting drop pods, but really like the way they work in game

I am not a fan of huge flat surfaces, I like models with a lot of detail to get creative with. Automatically Appended Next Post: My suggestion go to google and type in the model and look at others work for inspiration. Once I see something that's give me that oooooo factor the the creativy just cannot contain itself. I start getting ideas, blending ideas, design ideas, sculpting ideas. (Aka: on the drop pod doors for your dreadnought green stuff some dents like the dreadnaught is ready to bust out)

Models that I don't like are the ones I don't buy.
It's not a problem to paint them when you don't have to because you didn't buy them.
Vehicles are my preference - I never have issues painting them.
The rest - desire to see them on a tabletop is what gives me the impetus to paint them. I don't CARE what others think of the paintjobs. They aren't painted to enter competitions, they are painted because I will NEVER use an unpainted model on the table.

Pods are extremely boring to paint personally. I have to do the same things 5 times if not 10, depending on how you count it. Yea, I love them in game and would like a dozen of them but they're just so boring! I've actually just stopped putting the harnesses in the middle altogether and will probably just start using them for basing. I just finished a bane blade and I enjoyed every minutes of it so I don't think size is an issue as I'm sure you own landraiders. It is just a boring model plus a pain to build. There is also the decision of leaving it all separate then painting it and assembling which never works and what good sub assemblies.
I could goon for days about my distastes for the model.

I would hazard saying that the drop pod model for general esthetics and looking the part of what it does is good... but it is a terribly fussy to paint model.
There are some many flat spaces and edges and small details.
A plan to paint it can be difficult.
Assembled or unassembled, neither method has any obvious advantage or disadvantage (strong magnet the central console for easy removal for painting or a dreadnaught drop).
I get worried of painting the doors closed, turning the darn thing over and over to paint everything.
It just has a five feature repeating pattern that gets old pretty quick: at least a Rhino has a front, side, back.
HATE the weapon mount, remade it with plastic tubing and magnets.
Yeah, really thinking hard and no other model would bother me quite as much, other than being poked by DE army models.

Models that take a lot of panel line work, or very difficult details.
Clean looking vehicles are the biggest annoyance - especially depending upon the colors or paints (some paints are a bit tricky for large flat surfaces, even with an airbrush).
Or anything where I have to do a complex conversion or magnetization work - its not hard ....its just very tedious.

Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

I'm not a fan of painting tanks, but when I do, I put a lot of effort into them, with lots of freehand/special effects like OSL. I find it's the only way to break up the huge expanses of armour that I find so boring.
Huge expanses of models can also be a bit daunting, but when it comes to it, I'll adopt an all-or-nothing approach and get dozens of figures to the tabletop fast (my record is 80 guardsmen in less that 48 hours, and they look pretty good).
On the other hand, there will rarely be moments where I don't want to paint a tactical marine or other SM model, as I can do them fast but still to a high level.

Guard Heavy Weapon Crewman
|
I sort of have that problem with my heavy weapons teams...between all the urban basing I do, the weapon and the crew themselves its fairly tedious....but then part of that is that it takes three times as long to base one as it does to paint them because I decided if I'm going all out and building metal valhallans I'm taking my time painting them.
Usually when I get sick of painting my base troops I break out a tank or some "weird" unit like an ogryn or commissar, so I don't get pissed at it and stop painting for a few weeks...I've done that before.
You also need to find a painting method for vehicles that's enjoyable to you....I don't paint my vehicles like I paint my infantry....
My tanks for my valhallans are blue with red accents...I paint them with leadbelcher.....no blue paint per say.
After the silver dries I mix roughly 1/3 each of blue paint, blue wash and water and cover the tank in that....then sponge on or drybrush the weathered aspects.....gives it a rough, worn look and its a lot of fun

I have this exact same problem every day I sit down to do commission painting, and lately, whenever I try to do my own painting. I've gotten to the point where I'd rather be playing music, or games or really anything BUT painting miniatures.

I have 34 purple-primed firewarriors sitting behind me. i keep putting off painting them because i want to paint my suits even though i dont even run them all in the same list, yet i run those firewarriors EVERY time lol

I think one of my biggest problems is finding the proper painting method for painting my vehicles.
Here's an example: I have a BA rhino and baal predator painted. The rhino was painted in a wet blend style with dark shades and color. (AAMOF it's in the gallery if you wan't a closer look) I love the way it turned out, just the right kind of "bloody" look.
On the other hand, my Baal Predator was entirely dry brushed. The same colors as the rhino were used, but not shade of any kind was added. It looks decent, but the only reason I didn't do the same thing as the rhino is because I couldn't replicate the same method I used and it took FOREVER to paint that rhino.
