So I was just playing a game against some tyranids... with my tau
and I bought a Forgeworld riptide ( WAY to good against Nids)
but some questions came up...

are lictors or tyrant guard bulky? or very bulky? or anything?
We couldn't find it in the book.. but those are some pretty big models to not be bulky...

Nothing in the FAQ, so nope. Although seeing as Nid's don't have any transports, it doesn't really matter

FYI: It matters for the fw riptide, the damage is based upon the size of the target...

As a player who plays BOTH tau and nids (go xenos!) I would think it would be fair to consider;

40mm base and t4: bulky. (ravenors, zonethropes, etc.)
40mm base and t6: very bulky. (hive guard, etc.)

Now, I would also say...(and it pains me to do so) that the fw riptide is a bit....op....especially against nids who lack invul saves on the majority of units.

This would make it even more so for these models to be bulky.

I am planning on purchasing the new riptide, but honestly, I hope they tone them down a bit.

Ah okay, did not know that, thanks

I would still argue that RAW, they are not bulky, even though they probably should be

yeah...
as far as I can tell.. theres no rules for it because there doesn't need to be...
but really.. this weapon.. Even as over powered as it is.. doesn't get the full effect

also yes this riptide is disgusting...
I shot at a MC with 3 tyrant guard...
all 4 blasts hit because I guided him from an eldar ally
so it was 24 hits...
and that wiped him out cuz I used marker lights to ignore his cover...

How did you get 24 from 4 blasts? it only multiplies to 3.

As for the OP's question, read the R'Varna's rules carefully, it isn't just on bulk, but unit type as well.

there unit type is infantry..
and there were 3 guards... that got hit by 4 blasts...
thats 12 hits...

then there was an MC who was hit by 4 blasts... each one counts as hitting 3 times...
thats another 12 hits

so 24 hits total...
thats how I figured it anyways

Yeah I misread what you wrote and missed the 3 tyrant guard.

So the Nid player was tactically inept (not my first choice of words, but by far the politest that I can come up with at the mo) enough to place all three Tyrant Guard and the Tyrant in such a way that they would all be hit by a large blast marker?

He deserved to get shot.

Not saying his positioning was amazing or anything but....

Properly spaced you can still likely get the tyrant + 1 guard. If all 4 blasts connect properly that's 12 S8 AP3 hits, and another 4 S6 (I think)

That's 12 wounds on average which is enough to wipe 3 guard and the swarmlord anyways. Hell, JUST hitting the Swarmlord will on average wipe out the guard and do 4 out of 5 wounds to the swarmlord.

So yeah, he screwed up with his positioning, but proper positioning wouldn't have helped anyways.

They're not, technically, as we only have a PDF test rules. I expect a slightly tuned down version when it's published.

I have a dream to get a large brood of genestealers with toxin sacs and rending claws in cc with a riptide and see what happens. I mean, all nid players know to be carefull around dark eldar poison, shouldnt riptides fear something from us?.....
I know, not going to happen, but i have to find hope somewhere when a riptide hits the field =)

Experamental rules are there to play test them...
Am I suppose to put it on my shelf and wait for a 40k approved stamp?
also its 80p higher than a regular riptide... it can't overwatch, it can't shoot flyers... it can't JSJ...
it does have some gross fire power and toughness... but when you give it FnP and its at 295 points... I don't think its that far off...
For 300 points I would expect exactly this..

Compare to the most common Flyrant load out at 285.
No, the current rules for that model are not reasonable. I'm not saying don't play test it as long as your opponent agrees but I hope Forgeworld tones down that weapon.

I played against a flyrant...
guess what... I couldn't hit it...
also flyrants get iron arm quite often and that makes them extremely durable

I will agree however.. it is very strong against certain things

I can understand the frustration if your a nids player tho...
having no invul sucks.. and this weapon is almost designed to ruin nids

Either your opponent was lucky or you failed to shoot at it.

Quite often? 2 1/6 chances every game isn't "quite often".

More likely, the times he did hit with other units, the Flyrant passed its Grounding test.

The R'Varna has a blast weapon so unless the Flyrant was grounded or gliding, it couldn't be hit.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Hence the "opponent was lucky"
