Am I mental to be building an army for Guard at the moment? I was going to give them a Tau allied detachment. Maybe I should focus on that. Six months seems to be a long time. Arrghhhhh!
What do you think will be safe in the new release?

As far as I can tell, things like the LRBT (don't glue down the turret keep it swappable) and the Vendetta will probably be solid choices, along with a few squads of guardsmen and a command squad.

Firstly, HERETIC! IMPERIAL GUARD NEED NOT THE COMMIE-FROG GUNS OF CHEESE!
Secondly, no, you're not mental. IG is pretty awesome currently (we don't have rending lasguns but hey...) and you can build a couple different armies depending on how you want to play.
There are units folks will tell you that you need in order to have a good IG army, namely Vendettas and some variant of the Leman Russ. Competitively, I can agree with those two options, but generally you have to decide what kind of IG army you want to make before bothering to buy anything.
Any ideas where you're headed with this?

On the subject of what type of army you want, if you're stuck for ideas I have some fun/fluffy (tends to be the same thing with IG) suggestions:
1) Infantry company. Uses lots of platoons. Get as many guardsmen squads as you can and upgrade them to have heavy weapons teams in them. You'll be needing a CCS, preferably with a master of ordinance. Best way to play this is to sit as many guns/bodies on an objective as possible, and have IG squads in nearby cover ready to replace the first wave, second wave...
A useful tactic here can be to take Chenkov (I think that's his name) and recycle as many conscript squads as possible. Also commissars. Ever tried to get 100+ men off an objective? Well you're going to have *fun* when they refuse to sod off after getting shot up/assaulted.
2) Tank company. Take one HQ of your choice, two veteran squads, stick those units in chimeras. Then spam vehicles. Artillery of any kind is highly recommended, LRBT's are the mainstay of this kind of force. You may also want to invest in some AA, however.
3) Mechanized infantry. IG/Veteran squads in chimeras. All the chimeras.
4) Elysian drop troops. Some call it cheese, others call it fluffy. All agree it's effective in 6th atm. Stick anything and everything into as many Vendettas/Valkyries as possible. Don't be surprised if someone refuses a game with you, however.

Ahhhhhhh.... I put this up in the wrong place, but I was referring to the new release of IG codex due to drop maybe next March. Is it mental to be starting an army at this stage when all bets may soon be off?
As for the type of army, I'm planning a mech/tech army. Tanks and fliers with veteran squads aboard Chimeras had been my plan, but veterans are a good example of a unit this is liable to change in the new codex.
And maybe no Marbo!!!!?!?!??!

Going by the C: SM codex, and the differences between this IG codex and the previous ones, it's unlikely that the following will change much:
-Vets
-Platoons
- LRBT's
-Artillery units

I think that you are not crazy for wanting to start IG now.
There are some sure fire bets that won't change with the drop of the 6th Ed. Codex. (By surefire I mean 95% chance that it won't change.)
Infantry Platoons (the Platoon Command Squads and Infantry Squads.)
Leman Russ Battle Tanks (not so certain about varients.)
Artillery (mainly the Basilisks.)

Well, you will always need infantry models for any IG army (except the Armoured Battlegroup list), so its a safe bet to pick a regimental look and either pick up anywhere from 30-90 dudes, depending on if you plan to go mechanized or foot.
Besides infantry models, nothing is really a safe bet. For all we know, the Vendetta could be nerfed into near uselessness and Ogryn become the new hotness. Its all a wild bet and wishlisting at this point.
Pick a theme you'd like to run (foot, mechanized, armour, arty, air cav) and buy models that fit that theme. Then buy whatever else is good after the codex.
But buy a bunch of infantry. You'll need a bare minimum of 25 bodies guaranteed to run any legal codex list, and chances are you'll need another 30 for any game larger than 1500pts. It'll also keep you busy building and painting them.

Starting on 10 man infantry squads is the way to go in my opinion. Check out here

If you want to create your own regiment for a pretty decent price. Very cool models and from there you can branch out into vehicles when the new codex comes out.

Yeah. Don't worry. Ive started buying troops. I've got loads of heads and things. What I really want to do is create a rebel alliance army. Some xenos. Burnt off aguilas. Probably some Tau allies.
I love the Victoria miniatures stuff. Got some great heads from her and awaiting keenly the release of her female guard conversions. I've got a Chimera and a Lemann Russ, so I'll start with them, and figure as long as I magnetize everything should be all good.
But my original plan was to build a tank based army around vet squads. My fluff is that these guys have been fighting on the hoof for 15/20 years and for the last 5 or 6 they've been succesfully evading the imperium.
They are renegades with grudges against both Chaos (their home planet was over run after a rift in the warp opened up) and the Imperium (who dropped the big E - Exterminatus - on their infested homeworld).
Meanwhile the Tigers were being put to killing off friendly Xenos on Albafarn 12. They realised both the peaceful nature of their "enemies" and learned the truth of what had happened to their homeworld at the same time and turned against the other forces of the imperium, giving some of the Albarfarnians a brief taste of freedom and starting a game of cat and mouse with their Imperial masters.
The Tigers became The Ghost Tigers and a legend was born.... Or something....

You can never go wrong with infantry with Lasguns. No matter what, you will always need infantry with Lasguns. Unless you play Tau where you get Infantry with Pulse Rifles.
