So this year I'm thinking about picking up the 6th Ed. Rulebook for 40k. So can someone clarify what gets cut out between the Big Rulebook and the $50.00 one? Thanks for any help!

Fluff, and only fluff.

Possibly some pictures.

And fluff.

If you mean 6th edition rule book (not codex), the big difference should be things like art work and some background fluff on some armies. At least thats the difference between the big book and small starter box rule books that I have. If its a gift, spring for the big book for the new player. If your spending money on yourself (as you may already know 40k and its armies) go small.

You miss out on the fluff section (largely the same as 5th eds) and the hobby section, which is just photos of mini's.

You should be able to find the mini-rulebook from the Dark Vengeance kit on eBay for less than GW's other mini-book, though they should be essentially the same.

Don't buy the big book unless you really want the fluff, it's an unwieldy tome with no gaming benefit over the mini one.

Another thought if you care about the fluff is to pick up an old 5th ed big book. Assuming you can find one for cheep. It's not like the rules are worth anything in it anymore, and it's not so old it has collector's value. Then you can pick up the small rule book for 6th, and get all the mechanical crunch you need to play.
