I see people roll up their Warlord Traits and get some really stupid results lately. After some playing around, I think I want to sow something new at the local game store and see if it sticks. A house-rule, if you will?

How would you feel if someone said "Don't bother rolling for your Warlord Trait. Just pick what you think represents your army best"?

New elements in the game? Avoiding wasted results? New challenges?

The usual house-rule I've seen is that you either roll on the Codex-specific Warlord Trait table, or roll once and pick from the three Rulebook tables.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

I've been playing daemons more frequently and our Warlord Traits are awesome.

Space Wolves: 3770
Orks: 3000
Chaos Daemons: 1750
Warriors of Chaos: 2000

For example, as an Eldar player I could choose to roll on the Eldar table, or the rulebook tables. If I choose the rulebook tables, I roll first then choose which of the three tables I take the result from.

I'd be fine with that, if only because it lets you feel like you're playing the same general.

OT: I just finished Aliens.

Yeah, rolling and picking one of the three charts from the main book is good for the older books.

Everywhere I play does this as a house rule.

Roll 1 D6.

Pick the number trait that corresponds to your roll from any of the three tables.

I'd be really wary of allowing a flat choice simply because not all Warlord traits are created equal. Immediately, every CSM army will suddenly sprout D3 Infiltrators, while Huron and Ahriman are lost to the shelf.
As mentioned the nicest way to do it is roll the dice, and then pick from whatever tables are available to you.

I would say one free re-roll seems fair.

I have always thought the random warlord traits to be a bit silly when it would be the same commander each time.

What my friends do is roll two dice, and then pick one of those choices.

We generally just go with the standard of picking one table and rolling on it. Though most people prefer the option for the three rulebook tables and rolling, then pick which I think is a bit silly since it makes the army specific ones the worst because you only get one roll and one option for it.

Personally I think HQ's should have specific warlord traits assigned or purchasable. It makes no sense when you get traits that just don't affect you or are redundant. Like getting special boosts when next to an objective in a game with no objectives. Getting acute senses for all outflankers on an army that has no outflankers.

Personally I'd take the Stealth in ruins and Move through cover (ruins) every time. Crisis suits and drones don't need to take DT tests and my kroot get 3+ cover in ruins? Yes please. This warlord trait is my favorite and most hated example. It's a trait that on the right kind of field becomes absolutely silly. I've seen this warlord trait win games while most others have helped out mildly at best or been of no use at worst.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."

"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."
