Hey folks I am looking into adding some more depth to my terrain. I have the GW mat, which I like as a playing surface because it's quiet, stores easily without wrinkles etc, but GREEN grass? It looks so funny next to my war torn post apocolyptic ruins and soaring gothic scenery. I don't have a dedicated table and storage is a must. I was thinking about buying some felt (charcoal in color) and giving it some light dusting of spray paint (gray) to blend better with my scenery. If it works I was gonna make a Blood Bowl mat too using white spray paint and criss-crossed masking tape. Any ideas or previous experiences would be nice to hear. It's just so cheap... Check it out. $10 gets you a 6'x6' piece!

I never used felt as a mat for wargaming but for MTG.

I don't recommend it for it'll wear soon. I'd say you could use a piece of faux leather, and if too shiny, you can put a tiny bit of shoe's wax on it (don't rub it too hard or it'll shine more than before)

Check out thrift stores too, I grabbed a few bolts from a local one. A nice green one that's a bit softer and very matte, a silver one with a nice visible thread pattern, looks like metal flooring, the other one looks like red dust. Great way to change up your terrain for cheap. Sometimes I put stuff underneath the fabric to make hills and such.

Actually probably should add.

IF its very cheap felt that have a lot of loose fibers run the risk of catching the bottom of models.

can cause hijinks. i haven't tried the better wool types but my polyester ones will catch a lot of metal models . just 2cents

I bought a gray sheet and a black sheet from walmart, did some dryburshing and shading on them (with a can of spray paint) and they look great!

As far as I can tell, a quickly sprayed cloth with a bit of drybrushing is basically what the Frontline gaming table in a box is.
