Subject: Trying my new Slaanesh WoC list 2500 vs lizards

Painlord Titan Princeps of Slaanesh
|
Been trying a new direction lately thanks to advice I got from dakka.
I've been trying lately to fight in HTH with warriors of chaos, using mono-Slaanesh because, well, I love Slaanesh and everything about it! I've always loved Sigvald's story and character, and started using him as soon as he appeared in the last book.
Sadly, in 8th edition, I've been on a never-ending losing streak as I try to use Sigvald in bigger and bigger fighting units. Seeing as how I'm marked Slaanesh, not Khorne or Nurgle, and use no support units of any god but Slaanesh, I've been defeated time and again by the main fighting units of other armies - also I can't roll under a 10 for break tests. Sigvald and his unit lose combat and run away every game (ld 10 stubborn with a reroll just isn't good enough!)
So here's my new direction:
Daemon Prince of Slaanesh, level 4, Familiar, Charmed Shield, dragonbane gem, sword of striking, scaly skin, chaos armour, flight, flaming breath, allure of Slaanesh, soulfeeder
5 marauder horsemen, banner, musician, Mark of Slaanesh
5 marauder horsemen, banner, musician, Mark of Slaanesh
5 marauder horsemen, musician, Mark of Slaanesh
chariot, Mark of Slaanesh
chariot, Mark of Slaanesh
5 hounds, Mark.....awwwww
5 hounds
5 hounds
chimera, flaming breath, regen, mark of......awwwww I wish
chimera, flaming breath, regen
7 chaos knights, full command, ensorceled weapons, mark of Slaanesh
hellcannon
hellcannon
His army:
Slaan
lv 1 heavens priest
lv 1 heavens priest
lots of temple guard
lots of saurus warriors with spears
the anklosaurus with the initiative-boosting thing
2 salamanders
2 salamanders
10 skinks
10 skinks
10 skinks
6 chameleon skinks
6 chameleon skinks
We just played battleline, and he was concerned. I vanguarded up and when I rolled first turn, everything moved forward - including both hellcannons. I saw little need to try to thin him down with a lot of shooting - most of my stuff should live through what he could throw at me and give him a good wallop. My magic did nothing turn 1 and I skipped my shooting phase.
His first turn, he tried to cast spells to wound my chimera, but did little. He did manage to wound my prince and melt my sword of striking, but that was it. Shooting did a total of 2 wounds from some amazing skink luck. Everything else just positioned to receive a charge.
My second turn, I was ABOUT to charge him, when he reminded me all his temple guard would be swinging before my chimeras with S5 armour piercing attacks that got extra attacks on a 6. Not much I could do about that anklosaurus giving them an initiative buff, and I suppose the entire point of my list is to throw a bunch of stuff in and then use 6 dice to cacophony bomb and murder him.
I wasn't quite ready to do that, so in an unexpected shift I flew all three monsters to the side of his temple guard unit to breathe fire on it. Despite covering 14, 15, and 16 models in flames I managed to only kill 7. How disappointing. My magic phase had also been cut short by failing to cast slicing shards. I had also tried to charge his salamanders and several skink units. One held, the rest fled around. I tried shooting his anklosaurus with my hellcannon, but I scattered 6" and almost hit my daemon prince.
His turn he shifted position a bit. Trying to cast some spell, he managed to actually fail and ended his magic phase rather early. Shooting did very little, as most of his units had rallied that turn. He did manage to strip 3 wounds off a chariot with some skinks and some luck.
My turn 3, I again mostly avoid the temple guard. A prince and a chimera go across the temple guard into his saurus. I tried to get the other chimera in there, but it failed the easy charge with some low rolling. A hellcannon charged his temple guard flank to pin them down. Chariot that got hurt and marauders went after more skinks. Unhurt chariot charged into temple guard.
Magic, I managed to cast cacophony but it was dispelled. Shooting my hellcannon again aimed at his giant dinosaur, and again scattered 6", this time ACTUALLY landing on my prince. Luckily my charmed shield brushed it off. Watch your aim, jerk!
In combat he held, and my chimera took 3 wounds. Charging chariot got destroyed and hellcannon lost a crew member.
His turn, not much happened. He reformed his temple guard and managed to do 4 wounds to the hellcannon, but it hurt him back. My chimera was killed in combat while the prince murdered lizards.
Turn 4, I charged the other chimera into combat, the knights into his dinosaur, a chariot into his saurus warriors. Cacophony went off irresistibly and I rolled a 7 for the miscast, killing 4 saurus. Combat was very 1-sided, and he decided to call the game.
Some bad rolling from me and good rolling from him made some of the combats not quite go as well as they should have, but all in all my list was able to handle his very well. Had I tried my normal tactics, I'm sure I would have just been murdered by a unit that was superior in hand to hand to my own - and being forced to issue challenges with sigvald and unit champions would have also made things difficult.
I'm liking the fast and loose (hehe....) way this new mono-Slaanesh army runs, and it's somewhat unorthodox. I love it!

Quick fun note, Hellcannons are flaming IIRC. Dragonbane gem gives your prince a 2+ ward against it, so the Charmed Shield was a nice backup but not necessary.
Also, why not fire the Hellcannons at the big Anklyowhatsit from the start?
Anyway, really awesome to see it's working out!

First, I didn't think he'd be a big problem.
Second, none of his spells seemed that damaging, and so I figured he would be using his heavens spells to nerf my shooting
third, I wanted the extra unbreakable monster help in cc
4th, once I realized his ability was a bound spell, I wasn't as worried about it.
The charmed shield is something I have - I think I HAVE to use it, don't I? Against the first hit I suffer? That's what I thought, am I wrong?

You are correct on having to use the charmed shield on the first hit received, no matter what it is. I just figured from the way you wrote it that you thought you would've been screwed without it, when the Dragonbane gem was ready to go behind it.
I see your reasoning for moving the Hellcannons. Honestly not sure if I would've done the same, but it definitely seemed to work out for you! Maybe I'll try doing that sometime when I use them in a list. They are pretty stupid in combat.

2500.
And for me, well, I fail EVERY break test I ever have to make, even on Sigvald's stubborn 10 with a reroll. So anything unbreakable is something I can get behind.
And anything I can do to reduce the size of large, unshakable blocks of infantry like lizards quickly, I'm also good for. The shot always seems to go wrong for me.

Hey, just popping in to say I tried my version with Forsaken... and I think I'd prefer your version. The chariots being able to pivot and the fast cav making great distractions were what I was looking for, not the piddly little bits of attacks from the Forsaken who couldn't properly turn around and reposition.
Will try something closer to yours next time!

Nice report! I've seen Slaanesh getting a lot of hate in 8th (and almost as much in 7th), but it's always seemed solid to me. Cheap upgrades with no drawbacks on already awesome units is a win for me.
Sorry to hear about your luck with break tests and such. Just keep on trying! Lady Luck might spit in your eyes ten games in a row, but that doesn't mean she'll continue to do so for the next ten!
The more I look at the new Lizards, the more I see that their old tactics aren't going to cut it. This game is more and more about board control and movement, and the ol' Slann + Temple Guard + Chameleons + Salamanders just doesn't bring enough of that to the table.
It would have been a whole different game if he'd been packing some flyers.
Your list seems pretty hard to me, honestly. Prince + double Chimera + double Cannon looks like a lot to handle, regardless of marks. How does not having a backup Wizard or a BSB work for you?

Poorly! But in my experience having the backup and the BSB just ends poorly too. The dice are against me in this game, and it seems like almost everything I do fails. Even this lizardmen game, which I ended up winning, was an uphill battle AFTER I actually MADE it to combat, which is where I should have been cleaning up.

Yeesh. Well, okay. That's pretty brutal. But even if fair and fickle Lady Luck keeps spitting in your eye for the next 100 games, it's still not "forever". Hang in there!
