Have just been playing around with my army builder, came up with a 2K list that I think will be fun. I can post the exact list if people are interested? It's very simple though:

Calgar
2 x 5 stern guards in drop pods
4 x 10 tac squads in drop pods
3 x 5 devastatiors in drop pods

Options wise is simple, devs all have multimeltas and combi melta, stern guard have 2 x melta guns and combi meltas, tacs have multiple melta, melta gun and combi melta. Essentially every melta option has been taken, and it's 9 drop pods!

Thoughts? I don't play space marines, (apart from dark angels who don't count) but that's 65 marines! Calgary, and 9 pods!

You sought to cower behind your walls, weakling? Instead, by the will of Khorne, you shall die behind them

Think you've gone a bit overboard on melta lol...

Why Calgar? A CM with the shield is cheaper and just as much of a beat face. Calgar has his purpose, but you really need to build your list around him. I would take Tigurious instead. He can add quite a bit to an army. He also greatly increases the chances of getting the rest of your pods in on turn 2.

Your looking at an alpha strike army. What do you have that's going to alpha strike? What pods will you leave in reserve?

Your better off bringing 7 pods, with 40 hard hitting alpha strike models followed up with 3 pods of tactical marines to grab objectives. What you have here are 5 pods that are meh. Their not bad, but 2 squads of 5 sternguard and 3 pods of tactical marines are not going to have me really scared.

Now drop down 3 squads of 10 sternguard with 2-4 combi weapons each and tiggy + cm + honor guard in a pod. Well, that's some serious 'oh poop' going on.
Edit : Allies can also bring some extra options here. You could swap in 1-2 squads of space wolves instead for example. The idea is you want to increase that initial -punch- as much as you can.

Cool, like I said, I never play marines, so what would you do?

And Calgary was for the double doctrine ability!

Hes not worth it for that alone. Calgar's big thing is that he makes every model better than fearless and gives chapter tactics. If your going to bring 80+ marines on foot, thats a good solution as it makes them very hard to shift.

Give me a few and I'll write up a quick list.

HQ
Tigurius
Chapter Master (Salamanders) w/Artificer Armor,Shield of Eternal,PowerFist

Elites
9 man Sternguard w/Drop Pod + 5 combi-plas
10 man Sternguard w/Drop Pod + 4 combi-melta
10 man Sternguard w/Drop Pod + 4 combi-melta
9 man Sternguard (Salamanders) w/Drop Pod + 2 heavy flamers + 1 combi-flamer

Troops
10 man Tactical Squad (UM) w/Drop Pod + MG
10 man Tactical Squad (UM) w/Drop Pod + MG
10 man Tactical Squad (Salamanders)

Strategy
Turn one you drop down your 4 sternguard squads. Combat squad out 2 of the sternguard to melta armor. Your UM sternguard squad with Tiggy is there to kill any AP 2 targets. 10 plasma rounds can deal with a lot of problems. Your salamander sternguard squad is there to do an 'easy bake oven' concept on any large infantry squad.

The chapter master is there to help address any assault elements that come your way, or just to beat face in general.
You could go with iron hands or white scars on the CM instead. You lose some baking ability but gain toughness/hit and run. Both are pretty keen.

On turn one use Tiggy's warlord ability on the allied sternguard and use the UM tactics on your other sternguard. Its all about the alpha strike baby! Note, if your worried about PGs overheating, use htem on the turn you get to reroll 1s to hit.

Your other 2 UM tac squads are there to lend support after turn 1. Keep the 3rd squad in reserve as long as possible for objective grabbing. You might want to give them a heavy weapon instead of the MG.

Is Kantor worth it in that list?

A few changes i would make are:

1) Honor guard squad has the chapter banner (+1 attacks!).
2) Both sternguard squads have x2 combi meltas & x2 combi gravs both sergeants have combi meltas drop the PF.
3) Both tactical squads have flamer and heavy bolters.

4) If the ally marines isn't a must then i would recommend this for the 590 points saved.

5) Stormtalon gunship x2 skyhammer missiles =250
(these come follow one of the tactical squads 1 each.)

6) Thunderfire cannon x1 with drop pod = 135
6) Thunderfire cannon x1 with drop pod = 135
7) Hunter = 70 (your only non deep striking model, place him out of LOS so he can intercept).

This i believe would be better points spent IMO

I don't mind other suggestions. The fist were more to make the stern guard scoring. I thought thunder fires might work....

Why would you split the weapons in the stern guard and not specialise each unit?
