[b]Good morning everyone. I'm just getting back into Warhammer 40'000. The last time I played was some time back in the late 90's to early 2000's! Back then I was mostly into making scenery, and painting models. So my gaming skills (what few I had) are extremely rusty!

There doesn't seem to be many/any game shops or people to play with where I live. I have found a 500 points tournament to play in about an hours drive away. It's this weekend. Used to collect DA back in 2nd edition. So with all the notalgia from my childhood memories and the cost effective new DV models it made perfect sense to play DA once more. I have a copy of the 6th ed Rulebook and DA Codex and have been studying them

I feel that a tournament might not be the best place to (re)wet my feet in playing 40k but it appears that it may be my only opportunity to meet somewhat local gamers.

All this being said... I am here asking for everyone's input on how to build my 500pt force, suggest tactics and inform me how to most enjoy my first tournament.[b]

Welcome back to the hobby.

Just a warning though for the list forum, DO NOT post the point costs for upgrades on units(you might wanna go back and edit them out), you can say for example, Tactical Squad X points total, then list the upgrades it has(Without the points) but not an itemized list.

As far as the list, it looks okay but you are using dark angels and not using anything that sets them apart from regular marines aside from the ravenwing squadron. So if this is because you like dark angels, then no problem ignore this bit, but you might be better off just playing them as regular space marines.

Librarian is good, but I don't think combat shields worth using unless you just needed to spend the points.

The first squad is probably wants a heavy weapon.

The plasma pistol on the sergeant is probably a waste, he'd do better with a combi plasma, one plasma shot at 12 in' is not worth 15 points. Also don't like flak missles on tacticals, one str 7 shot at a plane probably won't bring it down and it's a 10 point upgrade. The squad also has no special weapon, really should take a plasma gun at the least.

Whirlwinds are not really that good unless you are fighting guardsman or eldar guardians, otherwise I'd rather have a predator or something.

Not really sure what the landspeeder and ravenwing support squad are doing at 500 points, might just want more guys

Also I'm not a fan footslogging, you might want a rhino or two.

to many points for a single s7 shot..... thats bad.

I REALLY appreciate the info above.

I copied and pasted from battlescribe and its not clear but there is a plasmagun in the first combat squad. I've edited it all, thank you for the heads-up

Also, I only included the plasma pistol on the Sgt because that's what the DV model I have is equipped with. Is it OK to play in a LGS tournament and not use WYSIWYG? Can I just tell my opponent "that Sarg has a Bolt pistol/bolter/whatever, not a Plasma P"?

I only picked out the flak because in the tournament notes (the only note!), they stated that if your codex didn't have flak then you could equip missiles with flak for 10pts. I read that as an indication that there'd be flyers. I've never played 6th and so flyers are an unknown element to me. Should I be afraid?

These are the models that I own. Could you or anyone else build a balanced and or competitive force from this, for me?...

HQ.

* Capt in Term armor with P'sword and S'bolter
* DV Company Master x2
* DV Librarian x2 (have spare parts to convert one to Bike or Jetpack)

Elites.

*15x DV Termi's (parts to convert to 5x TH/SS and 5x L'claws, also a few different heavy weapons)
*Dreadnought with swappable arms (every option except Plasma)

Troops.

*3x DV 10man Tac Squads with P'cannons and guns

F Attack.
*12x DV Ravenwing bikers
*5x Jump pack assault
*Land speeder with HB and missiles

Heavy Support/Transport.

*4x Devastators with missiles and Sgt.
*Predator with Twinlinked Las or Autocannon, Sponsoned HB or Las.

*2x Rhinos with parts to become a Razorback and/or Whirlwind

With only 500 points it's hard to fit in assault terminators, remember they can't charge right after deep strike. I'm also not personally a fan of expensive HQs in lists this small so the DA Libby with prescience is what I like to build around.

With him and bare minimum tacs that leaves you just under 300 points to play with. Deep striking shooty terminators are pretty reliable with deathwing assault and vengeful strike, and leaves you with some points to shuffle around upgrades or even take a whirlwind with what's left. Depending on what you're facing that might not be bad but leaves you no anti-air.

I would probably do something like this, cause nobody likes terminators at 500 points.

Librarian 95 points
Terminator Armor (proxy term captain maybe)

Deathwing Terminators 220 points

Tac Squad 95 points
Missle launcher w/flakk

Tac Squad 90 points
Las cannon

Take it with a grain of salt I haven't played this but taking out the termy squad with librarian could be rough at that point level.

For a 500 point tourny? I mean your best bet at that point is probably just

Bare bones Libby(TDA if you really want it I suppose is fine)

Tactical Squad plasma gun, a plasma cannon if points allow x 2 with rhinos

I imagine this is probably over budget, tacticals in a rhino run around 200 points and the libby is probably 65 or so, but 500 points with space marines really isn't much to work with.
