I've recently discovered ArmA II through watching a chap who does pretty funny X-COM playthroughs - turns out he also plays ArmA II with some group of dudes. Looks like a pretty fun game. I understand there's even an ArmA III now, but it appears to have not gotten great reviews.

Anybody play either? Are either actually worth picking up?

Both are awesome.

Well, that's reassuring.

My impression is that it's not the sort of game where you can just hop into a quick match, though, yes?

Is that guy member of ShackTac by any chance?

Ah, Beagle and Kilroy.

The thing with the ARMA series is, they're good games, but even better when played with a solid group of peeps and the right mods, just look at ShackTac.

I'm interested in what people think of ArmA 2 as well; because I bought the collection for £5 on Steam and not had a chance to play it yet...

DAMN YOU STEAM SALES!

I also picked up the Arma 2 collection during the Steam sale, but haven't installed it yet. Arma 3's been taking up my video game time lately. Haven't even played the campaign, just exclusively the Wasteland multiplayer mod. I understand it's a little like DayZ.

It's a blast, but I remain troubled that I'm a better virtual helicopter pilot than I am a virtual jet pilot.

There is a clan/guild/group of people that are ex-military that play the ArmA series (Operation Reality maybe?) and they're a blast to watch. I've never played ArmA myself, if only because I can't get into it, and my PC isn't happy running the larger fights.

Check Google for 'Realism Units' there are a bunch of groups that get together and do missions.

Eh. I don't think I want the "realism" experience. Had enough of the real "realism" to not want to have to address guys by their virtual rank over Teamspeak or whatever.

Eh, I can get that. I know a few guys that were tired of the CoD scene and wanted something a bit more realistic (also veterans).

I've caught some of the Arma II expac, the one based in the sandbox? Looks pretty good.
