so in a bid to get away from GW for a bit I've got myself back into warmahordes and after spending a bit too much time and money in the local geek hovel I've walked away with the circle 2010 deck, a woldwarden and enough bases and bits to sculpt some more golems for myself....

the problem is I have no clue what I'm doing, I have a good grasp of the rules but I have no idea where to begin with a golem army as I don't even really know what they do aside from punch stuff and grow trees so I could use a shove or two in the right direction

first up, what caster do I use? baldur seems good but I dont like the model so are there other options?

whats a good amount of light/heavy war beasts in a 25pts army? and which would you recommend? is megalith worth taking? should I invest in the bulky golem guy with pillars for arms?

what supporting units would be useful?

if my golems have no threshold do they ever go berserk? can I abuse this?

You're first decision should be on which warlock to take. From there, you're army composition choices become easier.

Balder is the Golem guy. He has all the synergy with them, whereas most other warlocks have synergy with living warbeasts. I have run a few golem lists using the guardian (the guy with pillars for arms). He is the toughest warbeast in the circle army and he hits very hard. He has some great abilities that you cant get from any other beasts in our armies such as Girded, and KD on his melee attacks. He is very slow though, so having shifting stones will be a big help. Megalith is also very very good and I would recommend getting him. Aside from that, the list will have an issue with speed and plays pretty differently from the usual circle list. I always found a unit of druids to be very helpful to provide a needed concealment bonus and spell protection. Having a guardian protect them from AOE attacks makes them much more survivable and will really help on the way in. The Guardian is silly easy to hit but it takes less damage from ranged attacks and has high ARM so your opponent basically has to choose between the guardian and deal very little damage, or target the druids which are a huge pain in the backside to hit with their clouds and camo cranking their DEF through the roof. If that wasnt enough, they also prevent enemy spell casting.

While you wont really use the golems in many other circle lists, you will run Druids and shifting stones in many other lists should you choose to expand to other warlocks.

The golems do not have a thresh hold as they are constructs, so they cannot frenzy. However, they also have mediocre fury stats of 3, whereas other heavy hitting beasts usually have 4 or, in some cases in other factions - 5. So, you can run those golems as hot as you want and never worry about the frenzy.

There is an epic balder as well if you dont like his prime incarnation.

Seconding Baldur 1 or 2. Yes like Kingkodo states his armies are slow compared to other Circle armeis, however his tier lists ignore this. Both p and e baldur's tier lists give most of your units advance deployment or a 20" deployment zone.

I've against played pBaldur a couple times and every time I've seen him on the field 90% of his army has advance deployment or a 20" deployment zone, usually all that's left in the normal deployment zone is Baldur himself and one or two other solos.

The Megalith is almost an auto include in any Baldur list. With pBaldur as it brings him up to tier 4 and lowers the cost of your heavies by one so in the long run he won't cost you more than a Worldwarden normally one. Plus he'll regenerate both incarnations of Baldur 1d3 per turn in addition to any other worldwardens in b2b contact with the Megalith. If you're running Baldur take the Megalith. Hell if he wasn't a character I'd tell you to take two.

I've looked into a golem army myself. My suggestion would be pBaldur, Megalith, Guardian and Warden and a unit of sentry stones. It will be a 25 point army, Warden and Megalith are great as they can geomance Earth Spikes. Guardian doesn't get much love but the ability to boost one attack roll and if it hits get that knockdown will allow for the Warden and Megalith to auto hit that downed target if for some reason the Guardian cannot take it down. Also the animus is great on pBaldur and being able to transfer regardless of having max fury is nice. Plus if you do a journeyman league you will have the models needed.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd
