Hello, I am fairly new to warhammer fantasy, I've only been playing my High Elves for about 4 years now. I'm trying to start my boyfriend a Dark Elf Army for christmas. What are some essential things I need to get him for him to be able to play a 1000-1500 point battle? This is what I already got him:

2 boxes of Dreadspears

2 boxes of corsairs

1 box of Cold One Knights

the book.

Can you all help me? Thank you!!

Sounds like you got him a lot of units, now he needs characters to lead the army. For beginners, I'd suggest:

Sorceress

and a Dreadlord/Master on foot

If you got him a second unit of Cold Ones, a Dreadlord/Master on Cold one is fun too.

You also really can' go wrong with a big monster, so the Hydra/Kharibdyss kit is a nice "big shiny."

If you haven't already done so, add in a modular movement tray set/dice/ruler as a stocking stuffer.

Oooh, I didnt think of the moving trays. You can never have enough of those. I got him paints for his stocking already (I'm way ahead of the shopping here haha). Thanks for the advice!

Dark riders or harpies. You've got a good number of troops there and a character/monster is a good idea too but you need some cheap, fast units to control movement.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I don't have anything relevant to contribute to this thread, but I have to say, there are some pretty specific warhammer things in this thread that made me smile.

1) Getting your spouse into the game. I find it's not at all uncommon to see a couple where they both play and one will tell you the other introduced him or her.

2) "fairly new" "playing my High Elves for about 4 years now."
I wonder how many other hobbies that have people telling you how new they are because they've "only" played for 4 years.

Oh, wait, I do have one thing. Give him enough to play, and then one "big shiny"
Don't give him so much that it feels daunting with all the unpainted, and don't give him so many big shinies that it devalues the worth of them in his eyes.

I bought a screaming bell, two doomwheels and a helpit abomination at the same time, and the screaming bell is still unpacked. After I had played with the others, I was just exhausted with it and didn't really feel like unpacking it. And that was the one I looked forward to the most from the beginning.

A part of the hobby is also that feeling of "aww man, I should get one of these things too!... or maybe that one?" Don't take that away by pampering him too much.

So the packs you have, one of Clarence's characters and one big shiny at most. No more, or it gets to be way too much.
