I'm not really terribly into 40k at this point, but I always ponder dabbling again with a friend. I don't want to go into super-competitive taudar shenanigans or what have you, though. I'd rather create a cinematic sort of battle. So, that in mind, if you could pit two different lists together, what do you think would create the most interesting dynamic? Competitiveness completely aside.

IG vs Nids for the classic "THEY'RE STILL COMING AND THAT ONE IS BIG!"
Sub Orks instead of Nids if you like greenskins.

SM vs Chaos for the classic "DEATH TO THE FALSE EMPEROR!" battles

Tau and orks are complete opposites, and are inserting to see the vastly different tactics used (and from a fluff standpoint, very common).

Daemons with as many rewards and psy powers as possible and a bunch of stuff deep striking junk for maximum ramdomness which equals interesting tactics

Guard vs guard is always huge fun, hordes of guys ant loads of tanks on both sides, becomes a real war of attrition.

Other than that, anything between Arch-enemies. Eldar vs DE, SM vs Chaos, Guard vs nids ect. Always get a really good narrative from those kind of games.

C:SM versus C:CSM is always fun to participate in. Also, Tyranids versus Space Marines or Imperial Guard is always a slugfest. Lots of death on both sides.

I'd have to overall give it to Orks...most players will say that facing orks are the most fun battles they've ever had.

My most fun game ever was against a fantastic Canadian Ork Team at Adepticon.

Otherwise I think Aspect based Eldar has something to be said for interesting games. That one requires much more finesse though.

Now that Daemons are updated...GKs vs. Daemons is incredibly interesting.

My best, meaning most back and forth battles, has been against daemons.

If you'd ever seen my Sisters rush my mate's Tau you'd know the meaning of interesting. Rush toward his lines, run if your Rhino is blown up, then sweep the field clean of Firewarriors while those damnable suits jump around like rabbits. It's always a gamble - can he stop me before I burn his scoring units, can he in turn take out my scoring units with his remaing stuff.

Or the other guy's Orks vs my SoB... I have to put on one hell of a barbeque if I want to stop them, and bikers/nobs/bikernobs hurt like hell. But if I do stop them even Orks will have to admit there's someone with more dakka than them. After burning up the trukkboyz+warboss last game I fully expect the Orks to add titties to their armors for more dakka.

Any combination of orks, nids, daemons, SM bike army, and eldar bike army is a bloody and high speed engagement. These tend to be the most fun of any of my games.

Really as long as you avoid unkillable deathstars or gunlines you will have fun.

If you want cinematic, then pick an army that features lots of psychic tests.

Your games will be like a box of chocolates: you never know just exactly what you are going to get.

To me, it would be Orks (green tide style) vs. Grey Knights. Basicly, just a lot of bodies on the table, crazy looking contraptions (kans, trukks, wagons) going against a small force that looks good. I have played this once, my orks at 2,500 points (180 just in troops) against 47 grey knights. He killed me.

Imperial Knight detachment: 375

Iron Hands: 1,850

Krieg! What a hole...

The House of Pain was fun, probably too gun-lineish for most player here, but whatever.

Skies were shattered, explosions went everywhere and things died Oh and lasgun were more efficient than Earthshakers at killing marine bikers, but that is something else.

I rather enjoy a fast, mech (is there any other kind?) Dark Eldar force against pretty much anyone. The idea of them being a lightning fast real space raid attacking a planets defenders appeals to me. Works against almost any army (not really Crons or Nids).
