Yes, but you can't choose to use the great weapon unless the magic weapon is actually destroyed. You can't give him multiple magic weapons, either.

It is still up for debate what happens if you have both a mundane weapon and a magical lance however (often comes up for Brets and High Elves).

Is it? Don't you always use the lance in first round of combat then the mundane, since that is how lances work?

Technically a lance just gives you +2 strength on the charge, it doesn't say anything about only using it on the charge. It's a little silly imagining someone smacking the enemy with a big stick when they have a giant greatsword strapped to their back, but hey.

Well i can say that the intent of high elves star lance seems to be that it allows this to happen. But again this is intent not fact.

IIRC, the Bret's have a direct contradiction to how magic weapons are normally handled in the BRB.
Specifically, if a Bret has a mundane lance and a magic weapon (sword, mace, etc.), they will use the lance on the charge, and then switch to the magic weapon. However, if they have a magical lance, they will use it in every round of combat, not just the first, unless they (somehow) also have a second magic weapon, in which case a choice is made.
It isn't uncommon to give a standard magic weapon for a benefit (like sword of ASF), and then give the character a lance, so on the charge you can have combo's like S6, ASF, WS10 shenanigans.

How do you get S6 and ASF all at once? On the charge, you use the lance for S6, and after that, you use the sword for S4 ASF.

IIRC, the interpretation has to do with the sword being worded something akin to "The model equipped with/wielding this weapon gains ASF" rather than "Attacks made with this weapon have ASF". It's all very gamey and not an interpretation allowed or recognized by all groups.

Brets indeed have a special rule
If mundane lance + magical weapon
then charge with lance then use magical weapon on next rounds of combat
If magical lance
then use the lance in all turns
You get the +2S on all rounds if you follow the RAW, but it doesn't make sense. People are going to be in an uproar about that, lemme explain:
BRB lance is: "Mounted models only, used in a turn in which you charge only, +2S" (doesn't specify that +2S is on the charge only)
Brets say that you continue using the magical lance on subsequent turns, no FAQ tells that you lose the +2S for any reason
Please not that it's clearly not RAI and not I play it either (meaning that my Wyrmlance dude only retains flaming attacks, not +2S)

Exactly this is the same interpretation some wnat to use to claim that a Piranha blade gives the Slann Multiple Wounds d3 as a rule then all his spells do d3 wounds. Its convoluted at best and you know what was meant.

I think you have to use a magic weapon instead of a non-HW if you have both.

Surely the more relatable example would be eternal blade+ ASF sword?

Don't know that one. But if you say so.
So, according to the people who use it, if you take the ASAF sword, and don't use it, you have ASF.
As demons don't choose items, rather than roll for them and substitute. You roll for an exalted and a lesser. With the lesser, you substitute down to the ASF sword, and the greater takes the eternal blade.
If you follow their train of thought, you use the eternal blade ,gain the stat boosts whilst maintaining the ASF.

Shouldn't be an issue for the Brets. They don't have any magical weapons with the 'counts as a lance' rule. They just have several magical weapons that give +2 strength on the charge.
Check the book yourself if you don't believe me.

Interesting point about the Lance being +2str. No where indeed does it mention you only get this bonus on the charge. It instead goes to length explaining that a Lance can only be used on the turn you charge.
However the Bret book is quite clear about magical lances bypassing this restriction and being usable on every turn.
By RAW this does indeed mean you get a perma +2str when using a magic lance... if you are a bretonnian lord or paladin.
You learn something new every day
edit:
I've been going over the magical lances in the bret book and they clearly state, first line, that they get +2 strength when mounted and charging. So the above gets completely invalidated and no they would not have their bonus indefinitely
