Since my school isn't taking part (BOO! HISS!) I decided to help a friend in need who IS taking part by letting him use my army and teaching him how to use it. He is the usual new player, he has been playing 4-ish months and plays (You guessed it) Marines. He was thinking the standard 2 Tactical squads, a bike squad and a dreadnoughts would be enough to net him the wins. But then he saw a round of play from another school league where practically every army was custom built to take on marine armies just like his, Heldrakes are Ion accelerators everywhere, with lots of melta guns to handle dreads. So I have offered him this army to play, its really simple and straight forward while being very resilient with a good damage output. Was wondering what you lot would think of this for a 600pt army list.

Avatar of Khaine 195pts

5 Dire Avengers 65pts. Wave Serpent with TL scatter lasers and Holofield 135pts. Total, 200pts.

595pts. Done.

I have 11 models and 2 vehicles so I admit, not a huge body count. But everything in the list is extremely survivable and is unlikely to give up first blood. The reason I chose an Avatar instead of a farseer (Apart from because model is my favourite) is because in the school league play offs I saw I noticed that AT/A-MC was laid heavily on meltas or a small amount of high quality low rate of fire weapons like rail cannons. Most armies concentrated on infantry killing, packing as little AT as they thought they could get away with. The armies I saw a lot of where tyranids, Orks and Marines, with splatterings of chaos, Tau and DE. Wave serpents are very survivable against the type of fire these armies put out, with Marines relying on the odd missile launcher and melta gun and the tau using Longstrike to cover ALL his AT needs, the Wave Serpents should be able to shrug off these low rate of fire weapons with a 4+ jink and serpent shield. The Avatar is because most armies brought *something* that intend to get up close and personal, this unit usually contained an expensive and killy warlord such as a Chaos Lord or Warboss. The Avatar would be very adept at kill such a unit, being able to challenge out warlords and usually smash them to a pulp before they strike, he is also blood murder against MEQ/TEQ squads that are so popular. hat do you think? Maybe I could swap one wave serpent out for a big unit of 6 jetbikes plus Warlock? Or perhaps a 3 man jetbike squad and add a fire prism or wraithlord. Has anyone got any experience with the Avatar at such low points, I imagine him to be awesome but you never know.

I like the list. It will fold against some armies but at this points level every army has a weakness.

I would replace the Holo-Fields with Shuriken Cannons on the Wave Serpents, using the extra points for Fast Shot on the Avatar. As he is the only thing capable of taking out heavy armor, you might as well make him really capable.
