Ive never bought second hand models before, and Im wondering what I need to do to re-paint a model.

Is it as simple as just priming them again?(Plastic models btw)

Also Im painting up an IG army and I need some Ideas, I have no real preference in schemes as I have no clue what I like atm.

Although Id like to see a Black/red/white scheme(If there is one on the web)

I would strip them first (I have always used brake fluid, but there is tons of threads on stripping minis)

Then clean up any mold lines/damaged areas. Prime it, and paint it.

As for your scheme, I would go with red cloth, black armour, and white on the trim, if that makes sense.

Or you could do black pants with red trim (maybe a strip down the leg), white armor, and red shirt with black trim. That has a lot of white up top though.

Ok thanks I was too lazy to search for one tonight, would they need stripping even if they only had a little paint?

And that sounds pretty good Ill test it out.

Any other ig schemes that aren't to dull?

If the existing paint isn't too heavy, you can often get away with just painting over the top. Largely comes down to how fussy you are about your paintjobs

Personally, I would paint them up something desert storm camo, or something British special forces.

I also think that urban camo would look awesome.

But this is highly subjective, so just do some images searches and see what else excites you.

If you want the models to look as good as possible, your best bet is to strip them unless the only paint on them is a good primer coat that is already the colour you want to use. While it might not be *much* worse painting over other layers, it literally cannot be better, so that leaves accepting something at 95%+ quality or doing a bit of extra work stripping it to get the 100%. I go for the 100% every time since I'm more into the painting and modeling side, and I need all the help I can get still ; p

Stripping models is easy, there are tutorials int he PnM tutorial forum for fairy power spray, dettol and brake fluid, probably others too. I'd definitely recommend doing it.

Stripping is hard work, only undertake this task if your models are severely obscured by heavy paint. Mostly, just a toothbrush and some soapy water to remove any grime or residue will do.

Try taking a browse through the gallery or image search some British Empire troops...

Acetone free nail varnish remover from superdrug does the trick. Just remember, dip them for 5 minutes, then scrub the paint off.

And for quick inspiration for guard, just look at how modern armed forces look, or even sci-fi forces from other fictional worlds.

Strip them badboys. I've bought tons of models secondhand and I never just prime over paintjobs, especially with metal and plastic stuff where the stripping can easily reclaim the entire model and maximize on detail.

Strip > clean up the model > prime. Good luck!

I use fairy power spray and a tooth brush. Chuck the minis in a tub spray them, leave for 20 mins and brush off. Job jobbed!!!

Personally I'd strip the old paint off, though I haven't done this myself so it's just my opinion.

As for colour schemes, why not get one of your newly-stripped mini's and try a paintjob on it? If you don't like it, strip it off, you won't have wasted a whole lot of time or paint.

Also, I believe this little app to be quite useful:
