So, I found this thread but it got bogged down defining when the game began pretty quick, and petered out without seeming to reach a consensus that I could see.

Question: When a Dark Eldar Independent Character (who has Combat Drugs) joins a unit (also with Combat Drugs) during deployment, and the drug rolled is Splintermind, does the unit have a single Pain Token, or two? (One for the base unit and one for the IC?) Clearly if you started them separately and had them join the first turn, they would have two, but I'm curious what everyone else's opinion on this is.

Unfortunately, I think the combined unit would only have a single pain token. The independent character joins the unit for all purposes, and the combat drugs rules don't allow for giving two tokens if you have two sources of the drugs.

If you're going first, you might consider leaving the IC with a unit without combat drugs and having him join the wych unit in your first movement phase. It does leave you a bit vulnerable to seizing the initiative, however.

I lean towards getting 2, He is an independent character, so he would get his own for his combat drugs. Haven't had problems with opponents complaining.

I could have swore that Combat drugs was rolled before deployment. Now I've got to go look.

Hrm. That is a good point. Are the pain tokens awarded before you put the models on the table?

I am not a Dark Eldar player, their rules are a mystery for me, so I inquired with someone I trust. This wonderful person pointed out that the rules for pain tokens have a clear time line that would make it impossible for there to be any answer other then 2 . I will review the rules in question personally, I like the reading, but I trust this person to the point I wouldn't even bother reviewing Dark Eldar rules if there ever was a dispute on the faction they primarily play.

If what I understood is correct; the Dark Elder player is required to roll for Combat Drugs prior to deploying models....

First off, per the combat drugs rules:

"Roll a dice before deployment and consult the following table"

Now, assuming you rolled Splintermind: each and every drug using unit gets a token. That token is acquired at the start of the game. When does the game start? Well, it looks to me that it starts when you roll for mission.

During deployment you now place the Archon next to the Wyches, thereby deploying them together. Each unit brought one token to the party, so 1+1 = 2.

Besides which, "Sharing the Pain" is pretty clear that IC's and regular units pool their tokens when they have joined together.

Exactly, I would place my haemonculous with my reavers to give up his pain token for them to get FnP. they are awesome when they have that. giving up a turn of boosting for that was worth it to me, (if i didnt get splintermind)
