While looking for a new project this last weekend I stumbled upon a long-forgotten army in my closet...

My 30 Sanguinary Guard.

I think it's time to finally finish painting and modelling these guys, but I need some help constructing a list. I know this won't be the best army on the block, but I want to have some fun with my favorite nippled Space Marines. I'll be building to 1,850.

34 models isn't a lot, but with careful positioning of the Priests they will all have a 2+/5+. Dante can deep strike with a melta squad against certain matchups. I really wanted to include the Sanguinor, but I feel he is too expensive in an already low model count force. Thoughts or suggestions?

I like it. I would take 2 infernus off one squad and concentrate them on another squad to have 4 dropping with the dante bomb. Even serpents with shields up and a 4+ cover would worry about that! You're right to stay away from the sanguinor! Have you thought about dropping one squad and including a raven for AA?

I have the same models lying around (although only 20 of them), and I think they could benefit from some Dark Angel friends.

A DA Librarian with a jump pack and power field generator would make one of those squads a little more survivable, so that could be something to look into.

It's not the pure Sanguinary Guard army anymore, but I think it will work a bit better.

I had considered that, but I can't think of any flyers that actually scare me. Heldrakes can't bypass my armor save!

I am open to the idea of allying some Space Marines for anti-air, though. I have some Howling Griffons painted up that I could use. Maybe I could get a Hunter or Stalker?

^ yeh a 4+ would be nice! Can DA take 2 generators or is it unique?

Both ravens and talons are far better at AA than stalkers and hunters. Heldrakes may not be able to threaten you but flyers can carry scoring troops that you wont be able to deal with. I do often make lists where I actively ignore flyers so it does work but can backfire.

I can't believe I've never thought of this before. I would take a Libby with PFG and JP, 5 Sniper Scouts, and maybe some Flakk Missile Devastators. I'm not too keen on the Black Knights.

Wait, does the PFG also benefit enemy units?

I may get a Storm Talon for my Griffons and ally that in. I would rather not use a Storm Raven... Can't stand the model, lol.

Yeh many can't lol.

PFGs are not unique, and you could get a second from a Techmarine, but I don't think he can have a JP.

And yes, absolutely everyone within 3" of the wielder gets the save, but with the mobility of jump packs there are several ways to get around that. One way is to simply detach the Librarian before you go into CC, and have him join someone else. Another is to manipulate charge distances, so the bubble wouldn't be close enough when CC happens, and finally, since Dante has hit an run, you could do a lot of shenanigans by hiding in close combat when it's opportune to do so, and run off when you feel like it without worrying too much about the enemy running away and leaving your expensive guys as sitting ducks.


As for the Heldrake, you might not have much to fear from the flamer, but the vector strike will murder you.

The Black Knights are decent against flyers with a ton of twi-linked plasma shots, and they fit into your super elite theme, which was why I put them in, but it's not exactly super thought-through, so don't worry about it if you don't like them.


Since you mentioned you have Howling Griffons, one option is to ally them in. The Stormtalon would be helpful to you, but also a Chapter Master with JP, AA, and Shield Eternal (and some sort of weapon, obviously) would be a great tank to keep one of your units alive for a lot longer.


Flakk missiles is something I would stay away from. They would be the only guys in your army with a 3+ save, and would be very vulnerable to just getting pasted on turn one if your opponent is even slightly worried about them. And that's without even considering how unimpressive they are against flyers in the first place.

I hadn't considered using a Chapter Master with Jump Pack. I would probably give him a Relic Blade for some additional swings at I5, or a Thunder Hammer for AP2 hits. The problem is he costs as much as a whole squad of Sanguinary Guard... Lowering my numbers even further :/

I see your point regarding the Flakk Missiles. I probably should stick with the 2+ save idea.

I'd rather have 5 Guards and a Chapter Master who will actually make it to the enemy lines than 10 Guards who just get shot to death. Plus, if you think about it in wounds instead of models, it's 9 instead of 10, so it's actually not that big of a difference.

One more question re the pf generator. Is it every model within 3" or every unit within 3"?

It's never gonna be competitive but it's a cool list

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't it 8 wounds instead of 10? It's also less attacks and less scoring models.

My goal is to not get tabled every game, like I have thus far. I'm a pretty competent player but this list just folds to a good general piloting a well-balanced list.

Chapter Master has four wounds. And the PFG is every model within 3.
