This is a bit of a multi-post. I originally upped this to the end of an Advice/Tips thread I initiated a year or two back. But now that I'm just showing off the results, I making this new topic.

The Mk 1 Hellfire Land Raider, as seen in the pages of the original Rogue Trader 40k Rulebook.

I always felt a little disappointed that the first plastic Land Raider in 1988 didn't look quite like the prototype the Games Workshop staff played with in 1986 and 1987.
Now I've addressed that little issue for myself with a couple of scratch-builds.

The original one was smaller, about Rhino sized. So I upped the proportions to match the modern heroic scale of GW products.

I prefer this gritty, WW1, no-nonsense style. No ridiculous skulls or Gothic motifs for me. Just a pair of huge stomping tracks with a lil' tank attached to them.

I'm looking forward to painting this up with an aged and battle-worn paint-job. Something a little more in line with some current IG modelling, having a down to earth feel.

I'm confused. Is that thing a 3D render or the actual model?

Either way it looks cool.

That's seriously excellent! As someone else who's really devoted to a particular retro aesthetic, I dig this a lot.

really nice work.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

Oh Lord !

I've always wanted to get THIS land raider model. When I finally got my RT era Land Raider, I realized that it was different from this one.

I love what you've done here. Wonderful work.

I'm afraid I didn't take any pics of the process.

It's just a matter of measurement and analysis of the pics. I began by using a printout paperware plan of the old Land Raider. And then made a side view drawing of what I thought the prototype dimensions must have been.

The rest is just diligent cutting and cementing of plasticard pieces, mostly using Tamiya Fine Cement. With the notable exception of the laser cannons, which I made of different pen parts glued together, and then copied to resin a few times for each Land Raider I'm making.

At the very least, people should consider plasticard (polystyrene) instead of cardboard when using those paperware patterns.

All this stuff is relatively easy for me as I am a professional miniature sculptor. The most difficult part for me was making a choice about scale. If you look closely at the pics from the RT rulebook, you could make out the 25mm slotta-base used to make the mount for the laser cannon, and extrapolate from the known size of a 25mm slotta-base that the original model was almost as small as a Rhino. It was my design choice to up the size to match the modern Land Raider in ci volume, and i had to adjust the details on the sides to accommodate that change.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Here are some pics I had laying about of the HF LR dev. (And YES, those are original greens of Beakie Space Marines that I have sculpted. )

And now I'm turning my attention to also making some scratch Rhino models, with a few tweaks to bring the old school flavor up to date..
