Hey guys, So I'm shopping for a Christmas present for my nephew, the how to paint book from citadel... whats in it? does it name the current paints, or the old ones?
is there a better one for a 9 year old to follow?
I'm happy to guide him with anything really, but I came across it and thought it might be good?

He's collecting Chaos Marines, and I'l likely be grabbing a couple of kits for him to go with. Having already provided paints and Dark Vengeance figures for him off my shelf earlier in the year.
Who's got the book? do you rate it? and the dvd?

The one with the DVD is based on the current system. It is easy to follow. Basic Technique is covered and complete tutorials for:
Tyranids Hive Fleet Kraken
Orc Ironskinz
LOTR Haradrim
Empire Army of Reikland
Space Marine Aurora Chapter
Legions of Khemri (Tomb Kings)
LOTR Army of Minas Tirith
Dark Eldar: Kabal of the Keening Blade

It's a good book. When I got back into painting about a year ago I used it a lot while hanging out inside the GW store. Some great tips for people who aren't already experienced painters.

It also has charts with stock color schemes, and the exact paints it takes to do it, and in what order, for example it says:

Blood Angels: Mephiston Red > Carroburg Crimson > Evil Sunz> Wild Rider Red > Kindleflame > Bloodletter

It has that type of explanation for like 50 different popular schemes, everything from Space Wolves to Uruk-Hai.

Its a decent book if just for the last couple pages. Useful to figure out the new colors GW has and how they work with each other. Plus it has a few little tricks and stuff for the new paints. I haven't actually looked at the DVD.

I guess the color scheme thing is on the DVD, there are maybe a dozen armies and how to paint them fairly detailed in the book itself.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

Cool, thanks guys.

I'l proably get it for him, despite it not covering the models he's actually collecting, that might be a bonus becasue he wont just look at one section, making him learn the other tricks a bit more

I can teach him my own tricks and tips but a book is more readily available to him.

the guide to painting space marines easily transfers to chaos space marines (they are just have a few more spikes ) so I wouldn't really worry about that. What's best about it is the simple way it lays out how to do the basic techniques of basecoating, drybrushing, shading, layering and highlighting with easy to follow examples that show you which brush to use where kinda deal.

REally is fantastic for any beginning painter and the best comprehensive guide I've seen put out for hobby beginners. Good gift choice sir I salute you
