Hey all,
I was kicking around different projects I might like to do, and these two caught my attention.
I've noticed there seems to be a sort of template for the SG army, usually consisting of Dante and four squads of SG's with jump Priests sprinkled in. Is there more to it than that or is that really about it? How does it do in 6th?

As far as Daemons w/CSM go, I was leaning towards some tzeetchy themed herald and a few big squads of horrors, keeper and some seekers, supported by a tzeentchy sorc and a few rhino mounted marine squads for plasma goodness....add in whatever else.

Anyone try anything like these lately?
Feedback is appreciated!

Aww. I was hoping for an army of daemons with a Sanguinary Guard theme...

You should probably add some punctuation to the title so people don't think you are making a SG themed Daemon Army. (which sounds pretty interesting.)

As for answering said questions. I don't think SG are very good. 2+ Armour save with no invul, and they are assault troops means they will likely not see combat and if they do they will kill whatever they hit and they succumb to more fire. Dantes special mask thing is pretty freaking annoying if you ask me but in combat he isn't miraculous.

I don't know the points situation with SG but im pretty sure they are mad expensive and you could get a lot more useful units.

As for the Daemons cant go wrong with tzeentchy goodness. Just don't take Rubric Marines and you should do fine.

I can't comment on the CSM/CD idea (although I do know Tzeentch is the way to go for demons) but as for the SanGuard, if you want to go all-out on them, I wouldn't expect much from them competitively. They take the inherent low-model-count issues that BA have and amplify them, and if you face a lot of Eldar, every AP2 shot (ie roll of a 6 with any Shuriken weapon) is killing 40 points at minimum. They can work as the core of a list, but you'd really need a couple of ASM squads and some Death Company sprinkled in. Priests are of course essential. That way, you'll still be able to do fairly well in a casual setting, but even then, you won't be able to take it to a tourney and win. The army will require a lot of skill to use, but could well be very rewarding once you get used to it. Most battles against even semi-competitive armies will be rather uphill, but that's part of the fun.

On the other hand, a SG army gives you tonnes of potential in terms of converting, painting and modelling, which to me are more important than gameplay, so if you think long similar lines you are certain to have a blast with this highly elite army where every model can be something amazing.

I don't at all mean to dissuade you, but you do need to be clear on what you want. If you're looking for an army to rule the tabletop, go Tzeentch, if you want an army primarily for looks and fun, I'd pick BA any day.

Hope that gives you some help.

This really sucks, I was excited about the prospect of a Sanguinary Daemon army...

Actually now I want to see someone make this happen.

Some more info on the Sanguinary Guard approach... it either works really really well, or it tanks it big time, and that mostly depends on what you're up against. The core as you've mentioned is Dante along with a few SG squads (with a fist or infernus pistol in each squad to make sure they can approach most targets). But there should be backup units as well - most commonly an Honour Guard for both the Priest and getting 4x flamers or 4x plasma guns. Stormravens are also useful for long-range firepower which SG sorely lack, just don't be tempted to actually put any SG units in them.

I'd like to see a list with 40 death company in 2 caestus assault rams. Not sure how the points or tactics or anything would work out but it definitely hits the 'awesome' button pretty hard.

And I thought SG didn't need sang priests because they had the sang noviate or whatever it is called.

Nonsense. The Battle Company box is perfect for filling out your ranks of aspect warriors with a large contingent from the Screaming Baldies shrine.

That only comes with the Honour Guard - Sanguinary Guard don't get one. With the small number of squads you have anyway, and the extra weapons options, the Honour Guard is usually a better choice - but that doesn't mean taking a couple of full Priests instead doesn't work.
