Hey there, I was wondering if anyone could clarify how the Black Legion Chaos Artefacts can be taken by models. Essentially In the Black Legion supplement, the rules for Chaos Artefacts are:

"Any character in your Black Legion detachment that can select Chaos Artefacts cannot select from those listed in Codex: Chaos Space Marines, but can instead select from the Chaos Artefacts of the Black Legion, presented opposite, at the points costs shown"

My question is, do you just replace the list in Codex Chaos Space Marines with the artefacts listed in the BL supplement and then follow the rules for Chaos Artefacts under the Chaos Wargear list? This would mean you follow the "A model can replace one weapon with one of the following..." and thus you can only take one artefact and even those which are not obviously a weapon (Skull of Kernegar etc) would replace a weapon.
Or do you just follow the above rule from the supplement which if taken just as it is might allow you to take any number of artefacts without replacing weapons?

So Dakka, how would you play it? What do you think the rules as written is? Is this another FAQ which will never be addressed? For what it's worth I'm currently playing it that you can only take the one artefact and it replaces a weapon as it's the closest to the rules as written as I see it. But the whole artefacts/relics rules are far too muddy across all of the codex which have these new Wargear charts.

I read and play it as you can take any number of BL artefacts! I think most would agree.

This sentence is not clear in what exactly it means. One interpretation is that you ignore the chaos artifact wargear list in its entirety, including the statement about replacing one weapon, and use the items in this book as a wargear list. Another equally valid interpretation is to use the items in the supplement as if they were on the wargear list in the codex; if you do this you still need to replace one weapon.

As I said, both interpretations are could be correct. The guys at GW need to clarify it for us and they have not, so until they do you need to discuss it with your opponent or TO before you make your list.

The statement is very clear; the only requirement for you to take bl artifacts is for you to be eligible to take com artifacts. Nothing else is required.

Thanks for your input guys. I have it in my own mind now that I should be able to load up on Black Legion artefacts, now to get my fellow players on board.

Anyone know if the other Codex supplements, Clan Raukaan, Sentinels of Terra etc, have similar wording or if they have wording closer to the Codex themselves?

While I agree that is HIWPI, the number of times this question/debate has come up means it is not very clear.

Indeed but I think until we see an FAQ I don't forsee this getting any easier/clearer. Luckily I don't have much plans for taking more than one relic but I would like to be able to keep two close combat weapons and take the EW item at the same time.

It's an issue with preconceptions, actually. If you read bl first, then read the entries for eg a csm lord, there wouldn't be this confusion.

You're told you can take bl artifacts if you would be able to take the csm artifacts. That's it. RAW is clear.
