I found this while trying to find the origination of the 40K Marauder Blade pin. This is from about 23 years ago, May 1990. Be advised, it takes a while to load. Link removed by insaniak .

Wow. I love how, on page 5, they introduce "another new face at the Design Studio": Andy Chambers. Interesting to note, the Raven Armoury advertised as the maker of the Slayer Sword, is still in business.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

I finally understand what people mean when they go on about how White Dwarf used to be good.
I was introduced to Gamesworkshop in about 2004 at the age of 12, when a friend got me into Lord of the Rings. I know people say White Dwarf was already going downhill before then, but even I noticed a considerable drop in quality between 2004 when I first started subscribing, and 2012 when I bought my last ever issue (the Dec Hobbit Launch issue). I stopped subscribing in 2010.
When I compare my 2004 issues to my 2012 issues, there is just no disputing the fact that the current White Dwarf content is crap. My 2004 issues have short stories and other fluff; deep and involved rulesets for campaigns (Lustria, Battle Companies, Kill Team, linked campaigns), scenarios, new and original units; guides for model conversions and scratch built terrain; detailed painting guides, battle reports that describe the units, tactics, scenario and terrain in detail...Thats what I loved about White Dwarf.
Now, its usually just a series of glossy high quality photos of the latest releases with some transparent bs about how great they are.

Very nice collection, especially ironic that White Dwarf 1 has an article on Heinlein's Starship Troopers, in light of the CHS lawsuit. I found it funny.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

Yes, back in the day White dwarf was a "gaming" magazine and covered all sorts of products - since to be fair GW did not have that many of their own.
It was not only White Dwarf the stores themselves stocked a whole range of other manufacturers games and accessories unlike the focus nowadays on the two core \GW products. They were a place to meet other gamers and be able to talk about the weird and wonderful things that were coming out without the disdaining look of our so called peers.
It was a great time to be a fantasy/sf gamer , no video games as uch and a whole creative bunch of people just looking to get stuff on the shelves

That made me very nostalgic and quite sad.
I hope everyone who attended this year's Games Day UK gets to have a look at pages 44 -50 of this and realizes what could have been and what still could be.

Indeed.
As awesome as it is to share the glory days of our hobby, being out of print doesn't exempt something from copyright. This isn't the sort of material that we can allow to be shared on Dakka.
