Subject: Best Chapter Tactics for Centurions?
|
 |
Slippery Scout Biker

Hey Dakkas,
I am looking to start building a secondary army (currently playing GK) and I am most likely going to go the route of space marines so looking at Centurions (I personally really like the look of the models) I am deciding on what chapter tactics I should build an army around?
I really like black templars especially because of their color scheme and fluff but I am not sure that centurions are best utilized under their chapter tactics.
Are there any experienced SM players who can shed some light on this?
Thanks guys!

The only occasion that Centurions are considerably affected by Chapter tactics is if you take lascannons and chest MLs with IF tactics (Tank Hunters!).
If you want to give them Grav (which is arguably the best setup), the only thing i would consider is WS, as you can have Khan join them at the beginning and give them scout.
Especially f you go first, they will probably be in a very advantageous position turn 1.
Iron Hands trait is a bit generic, giving them a marginally better survivability

I assume you're talking about the Devastator Centurions? What upgrades are you looking at?
Black Templars is mostly worthless for Dev. Centurions. They don't benefit at all from Crusader and they'll still suck in combat, even with the rending trick. Also, Black Templars as an army are a little weak.
Iron Hands for the FnP (and IWND on the Sgt) is always solid. Depending on their weapons, Imperial Fists can be good for Tank-Hunting missiles.

Thanks for your responses guys!
I figured that Black Templars wouldn't benefit dev. centurions, so my best bet would be white scars or imperial fists chapter tactics?

I believe the best buff for grav centurions is an allied DA Librarian with PFG.
Less than 100 pts, prescience and 4++ for certain. The troops tax is non-existent, you have a DA tac or scout squad instead of a SM one.

+1 to this.
They also can benifit from the combat doctrines in other cases. Rerolling snap shots against flyers means they can do some damage to flyers.

I would think a divination inquisitor with the scout/splitfire/nightvision book would be good for centurions as well since he is so cheap points wise. Also if you take coteaz he gives you some cheap scoring which will help mitigate some of the issues with centurions eating up a lot of points.
I run mine with IF but I am looking at other options for when I run my grav ones.

Does the inquisitor book cost more than the omniscope?

it's the cost of a Power Weapon I think.
Still trying to figure out if an Allied Inquisitor or Tigurius is better for Grav cannon centurions. Or the PFG librarian.

413th Lucius Exterminaton Legion- 4,000pts
Atalurnos Fleetbreaker's Akhelian Corps- 2500pts

If you want Dev Cents with lascannons the IF are great and the IF supplement even allows them in elites so you can still have HS slots to get TFC and stormravens.
If you want grav cannons then the second question is forgeworld and allies.
If no forgeworld then I would really consider either IH, WS, or UM.
IH with their new supplement can get relatively cheap tanking characters, take a nasty IWND land raider, and the sarge with 2 wounds is a lot better at surviving with an IWND 4+.
UM has tiggy...see above.
WS with khan can scout the Cent Devs and if they take a land raider DT then it is a 12" scout move. Not bad.
With forgeworld then I would go with red scorpions. Their chief libby (Loth) can take 3 powers from Telekinesis...so GoI. If you then take some locator beacon on some drop pods or some mystics in valkyrie Inq henchmen then you can have shunting grav cannons with no scatter and a 2++ tanking character. It is much better with allies to give them a better tanking character.
Red Hunters are also excellent with their ability to throw in GK characters to tank and their libby's have really good support powers (the summoning can be very useful). Additionally skyfire for a turn of your choice on this unit can make a huge difference.

i have found creating a unique paint scheme worked best for me that way i don't have to use a specific book/chapter.
if you like the look of BTs paint them as so and still build your list how you want and use book/tactics that A work or B you like
DOWN WITH CONFORMITY =P
