It's a fact of war that your 10 guys are never equal to the other 10 guys shooting you. So in my late night stupor I wondered about a rule set thatwould enable players to field opposing forces of differing points values. Ie 750 vs 1000 or whatever.

To balance it out, what would you think to a rule set of heroic action points, in which the player with the lower point force accrued, in game, a number of actions that can be distributed across his or her force as that person sees fit.

So, all your units act as usual, move shoot assault, whatever, though you can then spend these "HAP's" to (not an exhaustive list, make any suggestions you want)

Move again
Shoot again
Make an extra attack
Hunker down and errect make shift cover
Jump on top of a tank, open the hatch and shoot the occupants (big points cost!)

Etc.

I remember a tale of a captain in ww2 that lost his nerve. His unit had lost comms and their "side" was falling apart under hmg fire. A corporal then runs right in front of all these bullets carrying orders from ond squad to the next, passed on command to the next officer, and helped turn the tide. Iirc he was awarded the victoria cross. Ill try and dig up the reference material as it's fascinating anyway, though that's the sort of thing I'm thinking of.

All thoughts welcome.

To add an extra layer, when the points are tipped in the other way (ie lower point player is winning by kicking ass) the hpa's are then passed to the opposition. Could really force players to think turns ahead! Equally, could it make for a too complex game.

Your 10 guys aren't equal to my 10 guys, but those inequalities are factored into a model's points cost.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

In real war the point is not to have my regiment of 1000 men fight your regiment of 1000 men, but for my planes to bomb your artillery, tanks crush your infantry, and then my 10000 men deal with the rest and hold the area. 40k in no way is a battlefield sim, tactically or strategically or any other meaningful way. Its a game of toy soldiers and dice slinging with some tactics and about as realistic as D&D. So enjoy it for what it is.

Now if you want to have special scenarios with one side having limited forces but made up for in some way by placement or terrain that greatly favors them, have fun!
