Hello,
Basically I have been toying with starting a new army for the last week.
Criteria
Assault Focused
Unique in Gaming Circle
Mildly Competitive 1250 Point Army
The most formidable armies in my group seem to be Grey Knights (Terminators/Dread Knight) and Tau (Suits). There are very few flyers so I don't run anti-air in my lists.
Space Wolves seem to meet my criteria and have the added benefit of models which really appeal. However I know very little about their builds having never played a game against them.
Below is a rough list after some Internet research and a brief look through the codex.
H Q
Rune Priest
(Runic Armour, Divination)
=120
Elites
5 Terminator Wolf Guard
(5 Wolf Claw, 5 Combi-Melta)
Drop Pod
=275
5 Wolf Guard
(5 Combi-Melta)
Drop Pod
=150
Troops
10 Grey Hunters
(Plasma, Flamer, Standard, MoTW)
=175
10 Grey Hunters
(Plasma, Flamer, Standard, MoTW)
Drop Pod
=210
Fast Attack
3 Thunderwolf Cavalry
(3 Storm Shields, 3 Power Fist)
=315
Total: 1245
Is Arjac Rockfist worth his points? I could replace him with Long Fangs but was hoping to stay away from a gun line.

Overall this list seems good but far from great since you don't have that much bodies.
With GH I'd take dual special weapons instead of mixing them. Speaking of which, at least third troop choice should be concidered here and if you want to be unique over spamming, try Blood Claws.
Arjac can be cool but I'm not sure if he's worth the points. Especially since (as said before) you need more bodies on the field.
Oh, and I'd rather have 4x combi-meltas with the Guard to ensure the First Blood.
However, this list will do IMO.

Thanks for the reply soomemafia.
I have updated the original post as I actually made a points mistake with the Thunderwolf squad.
Battle plan is to drop pod the Terminator and Power Armour Wolf Guard squads turn 1 and take out priority threats.
The third drop pod comes in empty up field to provide some cover to the footslogging Grey Hunters.
The Thunderwolfs charge up hugging cover.
I appreciate that the Thunderwolfs are probably not optimal but I cant bring myself to drop them for another Grey Hunter squad and Long Fangs.
Are Thunderwolfs best with Storm Shields and fists?

Thunderwolves can only take one power fist per squad, and 3 shields is probably overkill. You could get by with 2 shields and a single fist for AP2, but they are pretty good as is with a lot of rending attacks.
Unless you need the priest in a pod, take terminator armor over runic. A 5++ against everything is well worth it. Melta bombs on the priest or a combi weapon is a good way to kill points. Also consider a chooser of the slain. Depending on the role, you might want to keep codex powers like jaws and living lightning.
I agree about not mixing heavy weapons. Take dual plasma on one squad, and dual flamers on another.
Arjac is expensive, but can be worth his points if you use him right. However, you do need more units. Consider him for bigger games.

This list looks great with T1 Multi-threat deep striking...
For Wolves try 2 Shields and take the third guy with a power Sword? Somewhat cheap, the two guys act as meatshields to deliever the third into challenge where he gets +1 A for CCW's and with I4 and rending can still hurt characters. Okay the Fist might ID them, making them better assassins, but my choice would be initiative.
But where is the Priest going...?

Personal flavor for assault RP is Termie armor LL and JOTWL. I usually pop off Jaws first turn before I can get into assault range, and LL when I want to assault after dealing a few shots (choser of the slain helps out a bit there) but for bigger games an Arjac paird with a RP using JOTWL is devistating when used properly. (edit, I typed this hastily in between a rush at work. Here is the full post) but my RP ends up foot slogging unless I slog my 10 man GH and dont put them in my Rhino. Mixing your weapons is always a personal call, it has competitive functionality to it to mix, as well as it keep them uniform. Plasma guns wont hit as many units as a flamer in range would, but it will effectivley ignore Space marine Armor saves (assuming you go up against any marines) but AP 2 is good to keep, I would suggest Melta guns over the Flamers. AP1 and an assault weapon is pretty good, especially for a unit that can be thrown so easily into a close line shoot off, or one that might get rushed by armor only to get torn up by the PG and Melta (its freakin AP1) You do need more feet on the ground I would consider dropping the second pack of guard for another 10 man of GH 150 1x GH Flamer PG (free) You will probably shave off a few points dropping one of those storm shields, you could even put the third GH squad as Melta (which I think cost 3, its been a bit since ive looked) and your PG for free, or run 2 plasma guns in a squad of 10, thats alot of shots at range if you give them all bolters and their special weapons, which is a ton of opportunities to drive things down into the dirt with cheap troop choices while elites and HQ can go unnoticed (for the most part)
