So i'm thinking about a new army project, and just making lots of lists at the moment. This is a variant on a list I made back in 5th with pure CSM (DPs, Dreads and Defilers then)
Daemons are the main force, CSM the allied. Purely because I thought 3 Soul Grinders is better than 3 Defilers (although then I thought about Maulerfiends/Forgefiends). I'd quite like to keep the three Soul Grinders too be honest, but its not set in stone. Anyway the list:

Primary detachment:

Bloodthirster (2x Greater reward) 290

Bloodletters x16 (Bloodreaper) 165
Bloodletters x16 (Bloodreaper) 165

Soul Grinder (Nurgle, Phlegm Bombardment) 180
Soul Grinder (Nurgle, Warp Gaze) 175
Soul Grinder (Nurgle, Warp Gaze) 175

Allied Detachment:

Deamon Prince 315
(Mastery level 2, Nurgle, Power armour, Black Mace, Wings)

Cultists x20 90

Defiler 195

Went with one Phlegm so have two big blasts, and two S10 AP1 shots from the big guys. Two flying MCs to get in opponents face first turn. Thought might as well make two largish squads of Bloodletters as Deamon troops don't seem tough enough to be reliable objective holders, so might as well have the Bloodletters try and follow up the FMCs and hopefully not get shot too much because of the six big things. Thats my main worry, there are only six big things, and 4 of them are walkers, so can go down to a single lucky shot. I am not, however, looking for this army to be particularly competitive. But I want it too be able to actually get some stuff done.
Any advice and help would be much appreciated.

The only thing that sucks is that the Defiler is only AV12, but we can't change that. I agree- 3 Soulgrinders is better than 3 Defilers.

This is a fine monster/walker list for the points size.

If you really don't have any specific reason to use a Defiler (emotional attachment included ), I'd really suggest you use either a Maulerfiend or a Forgefiend.
They are just... better in the 6th ed codex. Maulerfiends can really run up the table and are great melee fighters, and a three ectoplasma cannon Forgefiend can become any opponent's nightmare.

Alternatively, a FW Decimator Engine is my recent favourite for walkers. You might want to have a look at the mk2 rules here: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Downloads/Product/PDF/d/Decimator_mk2.pdf.
A bit expensive (£££'s and on table), but great fun to play!
