Subject: chapter tactics: ok to use different ct's in a friendly game?

I'm painting up my sons of orar, an ultramarine successor, and as the codex says I have to use the UM ct's. The IF ct's are much more appealing though. I'm not a tournament player, is it acceptable to substitute, or do I need to start saying im painting an IF successor called the Sons of Orag or something?

I've always felt people should never be penalized because of how they want their army to look. There is nothing from that prevents you from saying that the captain of your particular company has his own command style that would be better represented by the IF tactics.
I think it falls in the same issue has creating your own chapter and playing Carnius Malgar, chapter master of the Megamarines, or having your Bad Moon Ork vehicles with "Yellow Paint Jobs".
This hobby requires a serious time investment and you should never be at a disadvantage because you prefer Green over Blue (To oversimplify).
Play the game within the confines of the rules and your opponent will never have cause for complaint.
Enjoy!

Use what ever CT you want. In a friendly game no one should care, and in a tournament no one will ever enforce that capitalistic rule. In either situation just make sure your opponent knows what tactics your models are using before the game starts.
If any one gives you gak about it, calmly explain that your marines are the "Sons of Orar" a 3rd founding Imperial Fist chapter from the 37th millennium. Often confused with the "Sons of Orar", an Ultramarines successor chapter. The situation is further compounded by the fact they all have exactly the same names as the 'other' Sons of Orar and come from a home world with the same name in the same star system, In fact unless you flat out asked them it would be impossible to tell them apart. Or tell them that while they are an UM successor chapter, this battleforce just happened to be trained by Sgt 'Hugh Jass' who learned IF tactics while serving in the deathwatch.

If its Friendly who cares? Heck even in a Torny just ask and make sure to list it on your list and defently explain to your opponent.

Basically who you really need to be asking are your 'friends'. If they're truly that, then you shouldn't have a problem.

Friendly or tournament game, as long as you are clear and consistent with playing your SM with IF Chapter Tactics I would not care.
Is it fluffy for the Sons of Orar to use IF Chapter Tactics, no.
Does an army being fluffy really matter when it comes down to it on the table, no.

I don't care if your models are Ultramarines, White Scars or pink Orks wearing cheerleader outfits, just use the Chapter Tactics written down on your army list.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Thanks for all the replies
I imagine that using a named character, such as Tigurius, will force his detachment to use the same CT's?

Yeah a special character with specific CTs requires the detachment to be that CT.
