I'm thinking of a future pre-Heresy/ Heresy 30k army but have no Heresy playing opponents. I'm sure this is common, so do those of you with Heresy armies use them as C:SM proxies, and/or just play a different army when playing 40k?

I fully intend to start a pre-heresy Sallies army in the new year, and while its primary function will be using the HH lists, I also intend to use it with C:SM, and C: DA.

Afterall, they're just marines with bolters. A melta gun is still a melta gun. A lot of the tanks/dreads are still usable in non HH lists through FW rules, like the contemptor and relic predators.

When I play, I am concerned only with the aesthetic of the game and how fun it is to play. As I don't try to forge any narrative beyond "BLAM BLAM, HE JUST SHOT. YOU. IN. THE. FACE... with a lascannon." I would simply run them as a counts-as whatever fits the bill.

I could see the lore-toters having a problem playing with armies 10k years apart, but hey.

The Warp.

I figure that's probably what I'll do. I love the pre-Heresy lore and aesthetic, but I doubt any of my buddies would be willing to pick up another game or fork over ForgeWorld cash.

Maybe this will also allow me to check out various C:SM chapters and find which Codex variant I want to go with for a future army.

Blacksails, what got you hooked on Salamanders? What're the differences between pre and post Heresy?

I'm thinking I may do a pre-Heresy Thousand Sons (even though I'm making a 40k one too), or Emperor's Children. I dunno.

I've loved the Salamanders since I first got into 40k. Probably the only aspect of the game I get remotely fan-boyish on.

There's not really a significant difference between them pre- and post- heresy. The aesthetics are slightly different in that the armour MKs are slightly different, but otherwise they're still awesome pyromaniacs.

Hence why I'd use them as a few different codices. They'd be perfectly WYSIWYG as C:SM army (just move around the special weapons), and I plan on having enough terminators to do a Pride of the Legion HH list, which would translate perfectly into a DA Deathwing list.

The pre heresy EC are absolutely fantastic models, and they make me so happy in my pantular region, but that said, it would make a pretty cool diorama to have standing in a glass cabinet when you're not playing to have both a pre and post-Heresy 1k sons. Just have them standing there like reflections of themselves.

i would love a 30k army but i do use them as marines in my reuglar army as my homebrew chapter love the old armor and use it for veterans or high ranking marines even given extras to line men i think the old power armor variants are better looking just saying

That is certainly an interesting idea. Have one display be bright like Prospero, to contrast the Grimdark Planet of the Sorcerers.

It is perfectly fine and legal to allow your 40k friends to play pre-heresy, they just use the pre-heresy FOC and against certain 40k armies this makes them very very powerful

3 HQ
4 Elites
6 Troops
3 Fast
3 HS
0-1 lord of war choice up to 25% cost of army

it makes for some good games with a different flavour

Oooff. I've not actually looked at the rules for HH. I hadn't thought about using 40k minis as 30k proxies. That'd be fun. I think I've managed to justify starting one, either after my 1k Sons, or a C:SM army.

I'll just have to start some reading to really decide on an army.

Honestly though, that FOC chart looks a bit similar to the Space Wolves FOC with up to 4 HQ etc, etc. Well, other than the extra Elite and the Lord of War. What is that?

The Lord of War slot is an optional slot available at 2000+pts games. Its a single selection of a super heavy/gargantuan creature (it explains all the selections in detail, but this will do for now) worth no more than 25% of your army total.

Well. excluding all the SM codexs, most of the other books/armies can still be used. (Witch let's face it. it's Marien players who want to play 30k games anyway.)

-Orks and Eldar dureing 30k, bassicly operate as they are seen in 40k.
-Politically Dark Eldar during 30k were a bunch of separate city states, so they have not been united into a single faction. But Dark Eldar raiding parties in 30k are bassicly as they are in 40k. They even play a role in some on the HH books. (not saying witch ones due to spoilers.)
-Some 'Cron War lords woke up early to say hi.
-Deamons like to hope threw warp rifts. deal with it.

Bassicly the only xenos that were not around during 30k with the nids and Tau.

The IG codex can be used to represent Imperial Army until a actual Imperial army list comes out. Even then, it would be easy to repersent the Imperial army force by just removing any aqualias from the plastic cadians.

Personal I want to make a HH army, and fluff be damn if the only other people have normal 40k armies. We'll play anyway. XD I'm going to be doing Heresy Era Iron Warriors who have started experiencing the touch of chaos. So it will be easy for me to just say "the warp did it".

I also feel 30k is one of thows "if you do it they will come", and others will want to get in on it too.
