So I'm new to warhammer 40k and I was wondering, normally is it alright to use a mawloc model as a trygon in tournaments and competative play? I've glued him and want to use the other one now.
What about a flying hive tyrant without wings and the body of a regular hive tyrant without the tail and scything talon fee?

Depends on the strictness of the tournament.

As a rule, I would say no.

Mawloc to trygon isnt too much of a difference so would probably be ok. Long as its the only one of its type. For example two of the exact same models but one is supposedly a different model.

If youre gonna play with a flying hive tyrant you should buy one. You wanna keep as close to WYSIWYG as possible and if youre using it often enough then you should be buying one anyway.

So then I should buy one model for trygon and one model for mawloc and what about weapons on carnifex...so I basically have to magnetize EVERYTHING?

I would say the Tyrant needs wings to fly, but the Mawloc/Trygon are so similar only a true beard wouldnt let you run it.

I find this an odd view, as the Mawloc and Trygon are completely different units with their own unique rules, while the Wings on Tyrant are only an upgrade that has no mechanical effect other than changing its unit type and allowing it to Deep Strike.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

As a general rule, especially for Tyranids: yes. If you're never going to use the Mawloc again (which I wouldn't blame you for, as it is kind of terrible), you could try to worry the head and talons off if the glue isn't too well done.

If you don't point it out, I doubt many - if any - of your opponents will even notice that it's a Mawloc. I wouldn't notice.

I've had enough people call my Trygon the Swarmlord to know that a lot of players have no clue when it comes to Tyranids.

If you tell your opponent he is a Trygon/Mawloc before the game and he's the only big bug then I'd be fine. However if you said your unwinged HT is a flyrant I'd have a much harder time accepting it.

I'd be fine with it, as long as it was either the only Mawloc (because it would be confusing otherwise) or you had some method of telling them apart.

I'd have no problem with a wingless Flyrant. Again, though, it would have to either be the only one or stand out in some way. You could go the classic way and stick on a pair of Balrog wings to a walking Tyrant.

This is why you magnetise things. I didn't magnetise my Trygon and I regret it, everything else is magnetised.
