So, with all the recent discussion in the Tactics sub-forum about melee in 6th, I got to thinking about how to use CSM assaulting forces properly.

Without focusing on any particular god, what I'd like to do is figure out an assault-heavy CSM list that may be capable of breaking a gunline army.

In the thread "Close Combat", we came to the conclusion that successful assault units have speed and resilience to get them across the field.

Units that look promising are:

-Chaos Lords with either a jump pack or a bike
-Choppy nurgle bikers (they're fast, tough and can take some good anti-armour)
-Raptors with some melta (possibly get two of them working with a well-chosen DP to assault at the same time, hopefully just after jumping out of LOS blocking cover)
-Typhus and Zombies to hold objectives
-Obliterator spam in HS - deepstrike in, shoot some shiz al-la termicide, then close in with short-range weaponry and assault)
-Heldrakes (Because baleflamer)

I feel that this list may be a step in the right direction, but it needs refining, and I need some opinions:
Spoiler:

HQ:
-Typhus [230 pts]
-Daemon Prince w/Wings, BBoS, MoT [230 pts]

Troops:
-Zombies w/+25 [150 pts]
-Zombies w/+25 [150 pts]

Fast attack:
-Heldrake [170 pts]
-Raptors w/+5, powersword, meltabombs [200 pts]
-Raptors w/+5, powersword, meltabombs [200 pts]

Heavy Support:
2x Obliterators [140 pts]
2x Obliterators [140 pts]
2x Obliterators [140 pts]

If you want to whoop marines. Take 2-3 baledrakes (or as like to call them, space turkeys) and laugh at his pitiful 3+

Except that I'd like to get assault into this list. I can already knock out marines with my single Heldrake, I'm not really a fan of them.

...I was hoping to find some originality, but even I included net-list thinking...

Have you tried the nurgle biker deathstar?

Your demon prince should be given the black mace, it's so awesome it should be an auto include

Like the thread name. I would drop power swords from your raptor champs and get two meltas each unit. Just drown the enemy in attacks. Meltas to pop transports then assault the insides. Meltas are assault close range guns anyways...

For Raptors, my favourite set-up is MoS/Icon of Excess - ideally with a MoS sorc and Hysterical Frenzy. Jumping around with a decent FnP and hitting first every time is a nice sight. You can't go wrong with MoN either, stops instant kills. The MoK Juggerlord is a very nice combo, but the MoS lord on a Steed of Slaanesh and with the Murder Sword is almost godly; the sword is AP3 anyway, but when in base contact with an enemy character of your choosing, it becomes AP1, Instant Death and has x2 strength. Highly recommend that.

I like that *evil grin*

Lemme see...

Spoiler:

HQ:
-Chaos Lord w/MoS, Jump Pack, Murder Sword [130 pts]

Troops
-
-

Fast Attack
-Heldrake [170 pts]
-Raptors w/+5, MoS, 2x Meltagun [220 pts]
-Raptors w/+5, MoS, 2x Meltagun [220 pts]

And then two or more troops, and maybe some daemon allies...

For an assault list I would take one of 2 things: either bikers and spawn in fast attack Burgle broke lord to join them Black mace Prince and 3 Maulerfiends. Just Multiple Threat Overload the hell out of him.

Or load assault troops (berzerkers, plague marines, slaanesh marines, Terminatorsm, chosen whatever) into 3 Landraiders. Most gunline struggle against AV14 so rush them with that.

Murder sword is meh. You're forced to challenge so that big character you want dead will just have his 2+ save sergeant accept the challenge and your guy is toast...
