Armies for 40k of interest. Made this list since I'm tired of jumping armies constantly. So made a list of the top four armies I aim to have around 2kpoints for.
I own iyanden already, just looking at how to build khornate daemons, salamander marines and, black legion. Would like to see what you guys think.
Keep to mind, I do try and get competitive with these armies and I know the choices aren't the most top tier competitive options. (If wanted to be WAAC, I would of picked Tau, eldar serpent spam, Flying circus princes and white scars)
Chaos space marines
- black legion
Chaos daemons
- khornate
eldar
- Iyanden -owned
Space marines
- salamanders

Iyanden is my favorite Eldar army. I played them even during 5th, and I didn't do very good... But it was fun (and bright). I'd recommend Salamanders if you want shooty power, but they were probably the most boring army I've owned. Drop in.. Flame/Melta. Shoot, die in melee a little.. Shoot.. Die in melee some more. Shoot a missile from a Rhino. YMMV. It was just another SM army, to me.
A good example of a Black Legion army that balances fluff and power would, in my opinion (which are all the Legions are now: OPINION), include the following*:
-Abaddon (Warlord)
-Sorcerer- Level 2, Spell Familiar (Excellent unit buffer and an extra source of AP2 fire)
-5 Bringers of Despair: Combi-plas x5, Power Axe (Deep-strike all the time, and cheap as possible while still being WS5/BS5)
-4 Terminators- Power Fist x4 (joined by Abaddon)
-A couple 6-7man units of Chosen with Melta or Plas x4 (no need for 10man, and certainly don't go 5man!)
-Maybe two units of 15-20 cultists (one is joined by the Sorcerer)
-A single Drake (It's okay to just have 1.. I find that I don't need two lately)
-5 Bikers with Melta x2 (because it's good to have lots of FA in case of The Scouring)
-5 Raptors with Special Wpn x2 (according to your local opponents)
-Land Raider w/ Extra Armor
-Defiler (Because: Black Legion)
-Predator Annihilator (Because it never hurts to have more HS for Big Guns Never Tire)
This list has a few glaring weaknesses, but also a few strengths. It's always best to take advantage of what your army offers, in this case Chosen as Troops and the Bringers of Despair. What I mean is, people think BoD are over-costed.. well, if you use BL you should take into account that if you do not include BoD you are wasting the supplement and should be playing a different one or just basic CSM.
*assumes that you want to use the BL supplement

Yea, the BL Supplement is something I would use.
One of the things in the supplement that heavily caught my interest was the Last Memory. So I would try to jump on that even.
Overall, I like the suggestion you made. Your actually the first to defend BoD from what I have seen.

Whether they are over-costed or not, the best way to take advantage of their WS/BS bonus is to give them plasma and keep them cheap (hence the power axes). So they have a purpose if you want Ap2 carrying and/or enemyTroop killing units.
Regarding Last Memory: You're looking at 160 base for an advanced Witchfire (should you make him a Level 3 with spell familiar, which you should because of what LM does), and what if you don't have appropriate targets in range? What if you roll up 3 Witchfires in addition to your Sun Burst? He has potential to be devastating in the right situation, but also plenty of room for disappointment. Of course, now we're talking about optimization or WAAC, and that's not why you're interested in Last Memory (or BL, for that matter)..
I did beat GKs with Ahriman, LM sorcerer and Fateweaver.. So that was a lot of Level 4 going around. During that game, the sorcerer didn't do anything because the only thing in range (18") was a Dreadknight and Landraider.

Meant to post this earlier.
Black legion
Based off your suggestion this is what i was able to make. And off the bat i like the overall feel to it.
Hq
Abaddon 265pts
Sorcerer - level 2 (3 if taking memory as it bumps it up one if i recall) spell familiar, last memory 110 pts
Elites
5- man bringers of despair : combi plas and power axes x5 229 pts
4- man terminators: power fist x4 (joined by abby) 169 pts
Troops
6-man chosen w/ 4x plasma gun in rhino 215 pts
6-man chosen w/ 4x melta gun in rhino 195 pts
20 man cult 90pts (sorc here)
15 man cult 70 pts
Fast
heldrake w/baleflamer 170pts
5-man biker w/ 2x melta 135 pts
5-man raptors w/2x melta 125 pts
Heavy
defiler 195 pts
Leaves off enough points for switching meltas to plas and such.
Also, i have not gotten to use last memory yet. On paper and thoery it seems great espfially if sorc is on a bike.

The bike is almost required on a LM guy to make the 30pts "worth it".. but I like the idea of him in a Rhino (or those cultists)
I like that list.

Any Ideas on salamanders by the way in the current meta?
I played them last edition when all thunder hammers were master-crafted.

My post was eaten in the dakka troubles last night. I'll try to remember it and post it again:
Chaos Black Legion:
- Kitbash Chosen from CSM and Warp Talons, maybe Sternguard and Horus Heresy marines. Also get the hose and tentacle maker to make some nice greenstuff tentacles and hoses to bling them up. These can also be run as regular CSMs if you don't want to use chosen. magnetise them so you can swap weapons at your leisure.
- Terminators with magnetised wepaons so you can easily change their loadout.
- Plague marines and Noise marines to fill your elites slots to taste. Magnetise some for weapon swaps.
- Bikes and Spawn to taste to fill your fast attack slots.
- 3 obliterators
- 10 Havocs with magnetised weapons for weapon swaps.
HQs you might want to look into:
- Biker lord, nurgle marked. Magnetised for weapon swaps. Could also magnetise torso to make him a foot lord.
- Cavalry slaanesh lord, could also magnetise torso for foot lord.
- Lugft Huron
- Daemon prince.
- Abaddon
- Typhus + zombie cultists if you like the idea of this option for your lists.
That would (and is) the basis of the list I'm building.

Yonan brings up lots of good points.. Magnetizing an army certainly helps keep your interest/focus on one army for a longer period of time vs. if you didn't magnetize anything.
