Ok i guess this is the best subforum if not please address me.

Here my problem, i like painting, i have several gw miniatures BUT i don't have a single army to play with.
So i'd like to have something playable and sorting a bit i think i'd like to give tyranids a try!

here's what i have so far:

Lictor 1
Genestealer 8
Mycetic Spore 2
Hormagaunt 14
Spore Mine 9
Carnifex 1

so i need you to suggest me what should i buy to make it a playable army.
if it can be of any help i have some preferences:
i HATE ranged biomorphs (only exceprions are biovore and pyrovore) but if i can build them as melee variants and proxy i have no complaints (i'e. i can build a tervigone with claws and then i declare in my army list it has a fething ranged biomorph instead or if it's really an issue i can magnetize the arms and swap them)
i prefer big nasty aliens to a "scuttling force"

now one question to regular players:
it's an issue if someone in a tournament shows a clawed tervigon declaring in the army list it has a ranged biomorph? i mean playing in "official" tournaments not among friends obviously!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
to make it interesting here's a pic of some modded hormagaunts

and a mycetic spore

obiously i don't plan to mod a whole army and i think this will be the colour scheme

Good conversion work.

Most if not all "official" tournaments require that you be WYSIWYG. Sorry.

As for list building tips, the best one I can give you is wait a month. Nids should be getting a new codex write around the new year.

Rule #1 is Look Cool.

mmmmh the WYSIWYG is a really a HUGE no go....
magnetizing 30+ termagant just to swap from spinefists to fleshborers to deovurers is REALLY time consuming (not to mention the cost of rare earth magnets)

not to mention adrenal glands or toxin sacs

I don't play Tyranids so I'm just going off of what I think, but I do believe you have 0 Synapse creatures in your current list. I think only Lictors and genestealers function without synapse and all the others in your list are subject to 1 of 2 rules regarding being without synapse which will limit your ability to use them effectively

Tyranid tips:

1) WYSIWYG applies only to weapons. Biomorphs on nids are all but invisible in the same way that seals, scrolls, grenades etc.. are on other races. Upgrades are typically never a required part of WYSIWYG on most models in the GW line (its just not practical for the average person).

2) Warriors, Hive Tyrants, Carnifexes, Tervigons, Raveners etc.... Basically anything as big or bigger than a Warrior should have magnetized arms.
Tyranids change a LOT between codexes with these larger models as to what weapons are available and how strong they are. Magnetizing helps you immensely as you can keep costs down (you don't need one of every kind) and you can also change things as new weapons come out or old combos become inefficient or illegal to use (that's a LOT better than suddenly finding that 3 or so larger models are suddenly illegal to use in the game and must either be sold/shelved/broken up and rebuilt).

3) You don't have to magnetize gaunts (its a lot of work) but if you do then regular gaunts would be the only ones you'd need to.

I'd use the time now to build up a good solid core of models in advance of the new codex (estimated in January)
