http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/12/02/warhammer-40k-moba-storm-of-vengeance-announced/

Written by Emanuel Maiberg

British developer Eutechnyx today announced that it’s currently working on Storm of Vengeance, a MOBA set in Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe. Slated for a 2014 release on PC and mobile devices, Eutechnyx describes Storm of Vengeance as a “lane strategy game” set in the dark, gothic, but not-at-all emo universe of Warhammer 40,000.

Storm of Vengeance will be based on canonical events in the 40K universe, unlike Relic’s excellent real-time strategy series, Warhammer: 40,000: Dawn of War, which told an original story about an elite group of Space Marines called the Blood Ravens. Vengeance tells the story of the conflict on planet Piscina IV and features two notable characters: Grand Master Belial and Ork Warlord Ghazghkull Thraka. Players will either defend the planet as the Dark Angel Space Marines or joyfully annihilate it with the Ork Waaagh! (I’m not yelling at you. That’s just the correct terminology). If you want to find out more about the original Storm of Vengeance and the Piscina campaign—and you do because 40K fiction is really awesome—check out this PDF.

Eutechnyx didn’t share more details, but the fact that the announced platforms for the game are PC and mobile leads me to suspect this might be of a smaller scale when compared to the likes of League of Legends and Dota 2. This is also Eutechnyx’s first non-racing game—the developer is known for titles such as Auto Club Revolution and NASCAR games.

Dawn of War fans may remember that the series was becoming more and more like a MOBA with each sequel and expansion pack, especially with Dawn of War II: Retribution’s Last Stand mode. If you’re wondering about Relic and the fate of the Dawn of War series, we last heard that a more “MMO-like” sequel was a “strong possibility.”

The announcement also comes on the heels of a recently-released trailer for Warhammer 40,000 Space Wolf, a free-to-play tactical card game that was announced back in August.

Sounds like a low-budget game to test the waters for 40k interest in the public. I guess it will have to tide me over until Eternal Crusade or DOW 3 come out.

Just to be clear, a MOBA is like league of legends? Or something else?

Yeah, a MOBA is like DOTA or League of Legends.

GW really is shovelling its licenses out these days aren't they.

My expectations for this game couldn't be lower.

A heaping load of do not want on this end.

The moba scene seems to be getting crazy over saturated these days, and none of the games seems to bring anything particularly new or fresh to the genre.

While I'm happy for a 40k game to make an appearance, I couldn't be more against this.

The communities I've experienced with established MOBA's are some of the worst and I can't help but wonder how bad the 40k version of DotA is going to be.

IIRC it is Multiplayer Online Battle Arena.

As I understand it, it is an RTS where you control one person with certain abilities, you usually have a few minions, and join up with other players to take out another team, though it can be 1 on 1 as well.

Said minions are NPCs who don't really use any strategy, though. Usually the objective is to destroy the enemy's base.

Basically there is a hero character who is directly controlled and has special abilities, can be upgraded etc and AI controlled minions who do nothing more than attack in a straight line and provide experience points when killed, there are usually multiple 'lanes' which are blocked off avenues by which the minions travel in order to reach the opponents base. The most famous examples by far are League of Legends and Defence of the Ancients 2, both of whom have massive player bases and make piles of cash so obviously everyone and his dog are jumping on the bandwagon (including Blizzard which is ironic because the entire genre originates from a Warcraft 3 mod).

Personally I don't see the appeal of such games and their communities are renowned for being obnoxious.

Eutechnyx has clarified it's not a moba

http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1s0mqq/we_are_licensed_games_workshop_developers_we/

Storm of Vengeance is a lane strategy game built around the mechanics of our TIGA award nominated title Ninja Cats vs Samurai Dogs. Basically we've tried to capture the feeling of a deep strategy game with features such as resource management, troop placement, a huge skill tree to unlock and fast paced tactical decision making and pack in into a title that allows the player to play in bite sized sessions.

After watching a Ninja Cats vs Samurai Dogs gameplay video, I have to wonder how GW could lower themselves to this. Aren't they at least pretending to be the Ferrari of the industry, not to be associated with this sort of shovelware?

.... ummm I'm agreeing with Zebio... I'd rather it be a MOBA then well... whatever that is. Like heck, it wouldn't go anywhere but having each faction have their own unique npc creeps and then characters that go around smacking the others fits somewhat with 40k and would likely better than some super blatant shovelware.
