Hey folks, since I don't get to play much except traveling to tournements I was hoping some of you experienced folks would help me with target priority against unfamiliar codices. I'll start. In order from highest priority to lowest. It could also be thought of as most threatening to least. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Orks:
-1- Vehicles - mostly open topped. Explosions kill contents. Effective delivery tools for lots o Boyz
-2- Nob Bikers - threat at range. Threat close up. Tough to kill.
-3- Lootas/Burnas - highest damage out put per model.
Chaos:
-1- Helldrake - unarguably a superior flier
-2- Obliterators?
IG:
-1- Valkyrie?
Eldar:
-1- Jetbikes - too mobile. Too hard to corale. Can score on you too easily.
-2- Farseer - buffs other units
-3- Waveserpent - tough and powerful
Tau:
-1- Pathfinders/Markerlights - buffs other units
-2- Riptides - high damage output.
-3- Broadsides - long range. High damage output
Necrons:
-1- Ghost Arc - high damage output vs armor or infantry. Buffs other models
-2- Resurrection Orb Models - Huge defensive buff
-3- Wraiths - Fast and choppy and tough.
Dark Eldar:
-1- Vipers?
Space Marines:
-1- Thunder Fire Cannon?
-2- Maybe broken down futher per Chapter Tactics?
Grey Knights:
-1- Purifiers?
-2- Dreadknight
Sisters:
-1- Celestine?
Blood Angels:
-1- Sanguinious or whoever?
Tyranids:
-1- Carnifex?
Daemons:
-1- Unique HQs
-2- Daemon Prince
Black Templars:
-1- ?
Space Wolves:
-1- Rune Priests
-2- Thunder Wolf Cavalry
-3- Long Fangs
Inquisition:
-1- ?

Sisters would not be Celestine as she just gets back up. You'd be wasting shots.
When it comes to priority, I would probably look at destroying the foundation of the opponent's list, and then name off the equivalents of like every army.
Mechanized armies: Take out the transports.
Transports means less troops. take away the transports and they got 1/2 the force they could have had. Againt IG this is all too important. Against Terminators, taking out the LR means they got to walk to you.
All kinds of armies: Take out the troops.
Troops score, send your elites at their troops and let sparks fly. Prevent them from getting where the opponent wants them. In the case of Tyranids, take out Tervigons and Synapse. (Takes out producer and the morale all together)
Shooty armies: Take out the big guns?
I would assume. Shooty armies seem to have a lot of guns, but if you can take out the key guns, the rest of the army really falters without the key elements. (IE: Imperial Guard Gunline with tons of lasguns and autocannons. Take out the lascannon toting sentinels and suddenly your wall of AV13+ is relatively safe for a lot longer than if they were there.)
Armies in General: The backbone.
Taking the Basilisk out of a IG army, the Deathstar out of the other army, the tervigons out of the nid army, etc can really ruin what will keep the opponent confident. If he suddenly does not have the advantage in the aggressive side of things, he will fail his own personal morale check and his strategy will die off slowly but surely if he relies too heavily on it.
This may not be giving you the answers, but it gives you insight into what you should look at in each race for targets.

This is so circumstantial it's though to even make a list. Imagine the popular Seer Council, it all depends on what powers are rolled, which warlock is in line to die first etc. Maximizing your own units firepower is also effective, a shooting squad that offers ap3 shooting shouldn't really be shooting troops with 5+ as it's wasting your points spent on them. In theory. Giving yourself a position in the war is something I promote often, am I the aggressor or attacker? Do I have first blood? Do I need to spend resources to knock off my attackers objective holders or protect mine? Realistically you can't do both often. When I'm losing I often ask myself "how do I win this game?" I beat a Tau player the other day with coteaz and 2 GKSS on the table because he didn't have any troops holding objectives and I had FB and a couple VP's off big guns and longstrike. Imagine if I played offensively that game once I was in the lead VP wise, none of my troops would be in position.

There are no Vypers in the Dark Eldar codex... I would assume you mean Venoms.
It depends so much of your list, it's impossible to give a response. Imagine a fully mechanized Necrons list... they dont give a **** about venoms.. but they want those Ravagers down ASAP. While a footslogging Iyaden list will priorize the venoms before they kill all those high toughness models.

With my Tau, the good opponents tend to clear my Markerlights, then my Broadsides, and then my Troops, as if I can't score, I can't necessarily win. Usually, the bad ones spend the whole game shooting at my Riptide and losing to everything else!

Target priority will vary for each Codex depending on what army you are bringing to the table. Most armies make helldrakes a high priority. but if your bring heavy 2+ save army, you no longer care. I think to properly list everything would call for a much much longer post.

Depends on the mission really. Play the mission objectives, not the opposing army. If the game is objective based, focus on the scoring units.
