Subject: should i sell my 40k army?

Hardened Veteran Guardsman

I have been a long time player of 40K i know my fluff in and out with most of the armies in the 40k world. I once had 7 armies in my possession. i am down to 2. my partially finished Nova marines and my imperial guard. i have not really played a game in years, and they sit collecting dust... I have moved to a place that does not have a game store in it, and the thought of trying to drive an hour or more for a game... well its like 4 boxes that hold my easliy over 5000 point Tallarn Imperial Guard force is not a happy thought. Tallarn was the first army i ever picked up, way back in 1992. The imperial guard have been by my side ever since... but now i am thinking of selling this force of tanks and troops... should i sell the first army i ever collected? its a hard choice. but 7 chimeras and 6 leman russ tanks, let alone more troops still in boxes... any thoughts on this?

This really isn't a question strangers can answer.
I can however tell you that there is an entire hobby aspect in the painting, modeling, and collecting without the need to play games.
You can also get on facebook and see if there are any gaming groups where you are.

I made a rule a long time ago to never sell my favorite army for any game system. You'll regret it the moment you have a GS open up in your area, and they're impossible to replace, and far too expensive to try. I learned this the hard way =] I'd keep em, the moment you sell them you'll find someone to game with, or like me, have your son grow up and want to play...

My first army where eldar. I have been through phases in my life that was very difficult or impossible to get involved with the hobby. But I ve never thought of selling them. I like the minis and I know that even if I don't get to play a lot I get to paint a thing that I like equally or even more. So for me the answer is no, don't sell you first army. Maybe one day your kids will continue to use them or maybe you will rejoin the hobby in an unexpected way.

Don't sell them. You'd come to regret it soon afterward, IMHO.

As stated above, not really something we can presume to tell you.
My humble opinion? It'd be a shame to relinquish a Tallarn force, especially given their rarity nowadays.

Like many have said no way to answer this for you.
My initial thought was "not unless you absolutely need the money due to life circumstances"
If you ever might play again it will be more expensive to get into the hobby than whatever you make off your army.
Likely you won't recoup the money and time spent buying your army etc.
but that is also not a definitely don't sell as if you never use it ....

This from me too. Unless you really need the cash and storage space - or you're absolutely convinced you never want to play again - it's no big trouble keeping your force for the day you meet another gamer you'd like to play. Lovingly painted minis have a value all of their own even if they're never used in a game.
An old friend of mine has his original 1980-1990 Dark Angels in storage still, and even played a couple games last year. He might not be too used to the present edition of the game and seldom wins but seeing those dark green guys with the intricate decorations and pig latin slogans on purity seals etc is always a blast. His 20+ year old painting is better than what I can accomplish to this day.

Sell, Sell , Sell for top dollar if you can on Ebay (pay the fees). Then if you want to get back into 40k later, just buy new.

In my opinion if you have even the slightest urge in the back your mind that you MAY want to play one day, don't sell. I sold over 5000 points of Chaos (my first true love) and regret It everyday...
It's a lot harder to get motivated to purchase/build/paint a new army (Orks now) when you had 5k of glorious painted Chaos Space Marines.

"For eleven hundred years, I have fought and I have seen the darkness in our galaxy. I have seen the vileness of the alien and the heresy of the mutant. I have witnessed the sin of possession. I have seen all the evil that the galaxy harbours, and I have slain all whose presence defiles the Emperor. I have seen what you will see. I have fought what you must fight, and I have slain what you must slay... so fear not and be proud, for we are the sons of Sanguinius, the protectors of Mankind. Aye, we are indeed the Angels of Death." |

Keep it if you can. Life is a moving target. Today, your game store is an hour away. A few years from now, one might open next door. For whatever reason, I mostly played the "odd" editions of 40k (RT, 3rd, and 5th) There were years in there where I didn't get a game in. But I kept all my minis, even in the down times. And now I have modern tromtallons flying air cover for RT beakies. It's awesome.
If you need to take a break, do so. But if you sell everything, you break that link with your past. Box them up and hide them in a dark corner if you need to, but keep them.

Do you need the money? No? Then keep your stuff. If a buddy drops by or you want to have a quiet hour of painting at some point or whatever... just keep it. I play only when I manage to visit a friend of mine some 150 km away AND have like half the day of time at least. Doesn't happen too often. Still, its an occasion worth to be prepared for.

TO me this is bad advice....look at armies selling on EBAY (unless "propainted" and I'm not sure how those actually sell) But looking at Ebay most armies sell for much less than the price of the models. Then take into account the cost of paint, the time you spent etc.
Getting back in later means even higher prices (given that prices only go up with GW), more time painting etc....
Like I said before...if you need money....or never want to play again....sell.
If you might play later and/or don't need the money...might as well sell.

Why not sell a portion of your 5k points. If you just want to play the odd casual game then keep a 2k point army with 500 points of interchangeable units. So keep 4 chimeras, 3 leman russ battle tanks and half of your infantry.
Sell the rest.

I'd say that given what the army is, meaning metal infantry and IG vehicles, it's a fairly valuable asset that will continue to appreciate. If it's fully painted and ready to play, keep it. As others have pointed out, it has a potential value to you far greater than the cash that you can get out of it. Further, it likely will be worth more later, so if you ever have an emergency and need money, the decision becomes easy.
I recently had a bit of a personal crisis that potentially was going to be very expensive. While it passed, I was glad I still had some gaming stuff to sell if I needed the money. When I do sell stuff, I tend to immediatly put the money towards another expense. IMO, armies make decent (if inefficient) rainy day funds.

Thank you, everyone for your input on this matter. On one hand, yes i could use the money, and on the other hand, I know i will never get back what i put into this army, after over 15 years of collecting this army, and all the codex's that have come out since i started playing 40k... starting with datafax cards to the latest edition, watcing the rules change, having my griffon become omitted and several generations later, returned into the games army list. I do love this army, its outfitted to match my love of Autocannons, and Hellhounds. let along tons of tanks and other goodies... yeah, i may well keep it, since i seriously was dragging my feet about cataloging the army to see what i actually have to sell... it was my first army, and i have already sold everything else or simply lost some armies during many different moves. My 2nd army was Dark Angels, and i had a chapters worth of them, but i never really mourned their sale, My Tallarn slammers are still my main love in 40k, so i will make due some other way, and will consider other avenues.
