So my friend and I have decided to maintain some smaller heavy gear forces to play with, and to possibly expand on in the future.

My friend is running the Southern boys and I'm running the Northern Alliance. I've decided that I want to run the Blue Angels, so I have a few questions about force selection and what I should purchase.

I currently own:
1x Kodiak w/ HBZK
3x Hunters w/ the regular assault rifles (from the starter box)

I know that I MUST HAVE a Mammoth Strider (because I've always wanted one of those!), and I will pick up a Northern weapons pack for the extra weapons and the bits to make a warrior monk/ chaplain. After that, I need help! I had thought about the starter army, but I'm not sure I need the extra hunters (the Blue Angels don't seem to have a lot of those) and I'm thinking I'll need more Jaguars. I'm trying to keep this as cheap as possible while still getting the models I need for the Blue Angels.

Thoughts?

I definitely agree on the Jaguars as the Blue Angel signature unit has alot of them. Even if that unit goes away in the next version of the northern rules in January (http://dp9forum.com/index.php?showtopic=15765), Jaguars are pretty ubiquitous so I don't think you'll have an issue placing them. The only other things I'd recommend for a smaller starting force would be a two pack of cheetahs and doubling up on weapon choices. You can make the cheetahs the CGLs for better spotting and electronic warfare but still leave the big guns on the standard squad members. I don't know if you prefer 40k style beatstick commanders or ones that try to command more than fight but the latter is much better for that than hunters and jags. I don't know if you have one of the newer field guides but the style of squad building has changed since the North got their L&L rules. You pick from one of three basic squad types, each with two of one weapon. You then can customize the remaining stock models. I'd try because of that to field doubles of weapons within a squad (two mbzk instead of the up to 5 you can have now). If you're itching to build right now, I'd definitely follow those guidelines or just wait till January when the new pdf comes out.

Thanks!

I'll probably assemble most of the gears but wait until January brings the PDF before I actually glue any weapons down, just to be safe.

I may pick up a cheetah pack too. That seems like a good idea.

The big news today from Dream Pod 9 is that there will be a new army list for the North in January in addition to the new one for PRDF available online right now. You may like to hold on further purchases until then.
