I've got an 1800 point list I'm working on, I'm looking for comments please.

Just a couple of things I'd like to mention when you do leave your thoughts

1) I'm not likely to play any tournaments (but there are a few smarmy faces I would like to beat at my local GW) so it doesn't need to be perfect.
2) I'm all to aware that odd numbers of drop pods are better for the intital alpha strike, so please.. I know 7 would be better.
3) A trio of Stormtalons work excellently in my local meta, so please don't suggest I drop one. I have a love for the talon which boarders on fetish.

The plan:

Bodies on the board, combat squad them out. Use the flexibility to counter specific units. Melta for things need a driver, flamers for things made out of meat. Sternguard for the things which are somewhere in between (MC's).

Pod 1
Tigurius 8 Sternguard - 2 combi-melta, 1 combi-flamer
Drop Pod

Pod 2
10 Tactical Squad 1 melta, 1 combi-flamer
Drop Pod

Pod 3
10 Tactical Squad 1 melta, 1 combi-flamer
Drop Pod

Pod 4
10 Tactical Squad 1 melta, 1 combi-flamer
Drop Pod

Pod 5
10 Tactical Squad 1 melta, 1 combi-flamer
Drop Pod

Pod 6
8 Sternguard 1 combi melta, 1 combi-flamer.
Drop Pod

Aerial
Stormtalon - Skyhammer
Stormtalon - Skyhammer
Stormtalon - Skyhammer

Total 1798

Edit for error. Was supposed to be combi-flamer rather than just flamer.

What do you mean by 1 flamer 1 melta in each tactical squad. You can't have 2 special weapons in a squad, I assume one is a combi? It is Also not a good idea to mix 2 different special weapons in a squad. You then have a squad that isn't a threat to anything. Where as a matched combi just ups your chances of getting the result you want with that special weapon.

I would take more combis in the Sternguard. 4-6 is about right in a 10 man. With your 8s I would stick with 4 and make them all the same.

I would massively reduce the tactical squads. Running 5 chews up far too much points with little to no killing power. I would get more killing power. 20 marines is enough at this point level 30 is the absolute maximum you'd want.

I agree with flingit (surprise) to many marines, also go with melta, combi melta or flamer, combi flamer for max damage output. Somthing you could do with the dropped marines is take the points and then buy some combi weapons for the sternguard vets, i would go for an 8 man squad x4 meltas, and x4 flamers meltas are out first and kill a tank, and then flamers there for overwatch (I find this works very well) or for killing MCs make it x4 combi gravs and then flamers or what ever you want because its all the same points.

Some TFCs would be a big help to this list, as you have plenty of AT, 6 small blasts with ignore cover to murder those gun lines would be good.

So for some math hammer we get:

-20 marines = 280pts

+ 11 combi weapons for the sternguard =110pts (or 165 if it's 15pts each don't remember atm).

With the points left over either 170 or 115 either way you can buy a TFC and have points to jingle in the case of the first number with 70pts left you can buy a stalker.

In my opinion, what i would do is:

All tact squads have melta and combi meltas.
All sternguard squads have 4 combi gravguns and 4 combi flamers.

Turn 1 send in the tactical squads and butcher all AV units on the board, Turn 2 send in everyone else to mop up what ever is left, if you end up going with a TFC or 2 then you can then blast the crap out of what ever was in any transports (i'm looking at you IG).

I would take combi-plasma over combi grav on Sternguard you get 3" more range and more stopping power against basically everything but AV14 and Riptides (and its pretty similar against the later). Grav is only worth it if you're relentless so you get the extra shots.

well i would only drop 10 marines, so that there is an odd amount of drop pods.
