Hey guys,
A quick question for you players out there, How would you feel about your opponent using winged models instead of jetbikes?

for ages I've wanted to play a heavy Fast Attack army with all/most of my models modelled with wings. I am currently about to start work on a DE/Eldar force and I have a large amount of scourge and swooping hawk wings. However, with my list I am looking more at taking jetbikes and shining spears etc..
  • Do you feel that a winged model would be a reasonable 'count as' Jetbike? - The overall feel would be to have the model in a horizontal flight position, so should take the same amount of space up as a jetbike
  • Would you want to see a more heavily armoured winged model? to represent the increased toughness a bike confers?

  • Just looking for opinions, as I model way more than i play, but i do want all my models usable.

For reference: I would be aiming for positions more like these, where the model is angled closer to the horizontal plane. Id most likely still use the flying bases, as I want them to have a true flight look, rather than a 'jump' infantry style.

    Hey Solar,

It certainly wouldn't bother me, and makes it a more personal army to you. However I know a number of players who wouldn't like it.

Beefing them up is quite a cool idea to reflect the toughness increase. Any ideas how you might do that?

Im glad someone would be happy to play me. The main concerns I feel would be size, as obviously the only important part of a model in terms of playing against is its size and LOS.

As with all my coversions I always try and keep the conversion on a similar scale to the actual model, that way it doesn't mess up any LOS and give me a advantage. So the most difficult bit would be to ensure that the models when prone roughly fill the same space as a jetbike.

I think in order to create a more armoured look I am definitely cosidering shields as a start. I think they would be a good basis for what would be a heavy duty 'jump' infantry look. Obviously with a DE/eldar army they have pretty small/slim bodies as it is. So I cant really add a huge amount of armour else they will look a little silly.

However, on that note I can certainly use a little GS to take their armour plates up a little in size. I think id have to go with a prototype model see how it looks.

I am just loving the idea of a winged seer council. I can get a true valkyrie feel.

Re LOS, the obvious option would be to say that the wings are 'invisible' for LOS purposes - so long as your models (minus their wings) are still around the same size as a jetbike, then most opponents should be happy. But that then raises another issue - a flying 28mm figure (minus wings) will probably be rather smaller than a jetbike, so you need to bulk it up somehow. The simplest option I can think of is a trailing banner or long cloak. Or pose the weapons so that the figure plus weapons is jetbike-sized?

As you've noted, an armoured look would be difficult. How about something to represent a forcefield instead?
