Hi all sorry for the bold title but i really need help for a tau army list.
This has to be very competitve as me and my friend are going to try and win the invasion(uk) tournament in febuary next year . he is taking space marines (i was too originally) but i cant stand the space marines (too goody goody)
so ive decided im gonna go with tau. here is what ive got (not in army list form) 12 fire warriors 5 pathfinders, 6 broadsides, riptide, ethereal and thats it i can spend up to 50quid to get anything else but this list needs to be very competitive.
here is my team mates list
space marines(ironhand chapter tactics )
librarian
5 man tac squad
5 man tac squad
stormtalon/lascannons
stormtalon/ heavy bolters
5 man dev squad with four missle launchers

i need to work with this
(i think its pretty good)
i am really struggling i need to get this list painted for feb
thanks for advice
Zinogre (ps i have had some experience playing with tau)

A really, really bad FW unit. They're trolling you.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Broadsides with hymp and the equipment that gives them sky fire I forget the name.

Aegis defence line.

Riptide with heavy burst cannon and again sky fire

Skyrays though are very effective against flyers

Well I think you should put sky hammer missles on both talons so you don't need any AA for the tau part.

Tau AA gear is called "Velocity Tracker" and is very expensive for a 600pt list.

Since there's no way all that fits into 600pts I'd try something like:

Cadre Fireblade (this removes the chance of them getting a free VP for killing your ethereal which you don't have enough bodies to defend properly)

7x Fire Warrior team with Pulse Rifles

6x Fire Warrior team with Pulse Rifles

Riptide with Ion Accelerator

6x Pathfinders with MLs

6x Pathfinders with MLs

ADL with quad-gun

The Cadre hangs out on the quad gun with the 6 man team intercepting and shooting at BS5 while his squad shoots anything that gets within 30" with 18 shots. Also they will all have a nice 4+ cover save (2+ if you goto ground and you're putting out enough shots that you should get at least a few 6s and they'll have the pathfinders boosting those snap shots as well)

Having him with interceptor leaves your partners flyer with the freedom to engage your opponents heavier vehicles and between the quad-gun and the HB flyer no enemy flyer should get more than 1round of shooting

the other fire warrior team secures a second backfield objective since you don't have the resilience or man power to be aggressive with them.

1 pathfinder team stays behind the ADL and provides ML support for them while the other caters to the needs of the riptide.

I work to much to do a tournament much to my dismay so I'm not 100% sure how competative this is but this is probably what I would bring if I was in your shoes. You fill your minimum FO, have a tough heavy hitter that can glance AV14 or demolish most other stuff, you cover your share of AA and can put 4 S7 TW shots into anything if the sky is clear, and have enough force multipliers to keep everyone operating at almost max efficiency plus you're not offering up a free VP and get that extra shot at longer range.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
here is a list i camee up with whilst at work although it is fasight enclaves i thought it may be fun
commander with two tl flamers and drone controller= 113
3 crisis suits with 6 flamers andd 3 shield drones=132
3 crisis suites with 6 flamers and 3 shield drones and a drone controller=140
3 crisis suits with 4 fusion blasters and 3 marker drones and a drone controller=170
that leaves 45 pts to spend

I'd drop the line, for something else. Like more fire warriors, you could fill out both teams for the 100 points. If you still think you need the anti-air you could easily bring in a broadside with velocity tracker for about 85 points, use the fifteen extra points to give something to the riptide. 90 points could also get a pair of TL- plasma suits with advanced targeting,

I figured the line and gun would give some more high strength shots plus increase the survivability of the troops he does have but you're not wrong on the suits and toys for the tide. I was also operating on the premise that he had what he listed ONLY and had 50quid extra to add to it. Suits are more than that but a cadre and ADL should be around that price (no idea what a quid is but I assumed it was similar to a dollar, sorry if I'm off on that).

As for the flamer list I think it's to high risk for what you get out of it. You have to be far to close and 1 botched roll and you'll lose the unit. Especially since iirc our flamer is only AP5 so almost everything will at least get a save, granted they'd work great if they were assaulted but still I don't think the damage output would be high enough to function the way you're hoping. Also the marker drones are on the team that can use them so they can't be used by them.

For the cost of the drones you can get a whole other crisis team, maybe give them MPs to synergise with the ML range and Target Locks so they can shoot at a different target.

with the spare points I'd switch 1 team to burst cannon for 24 shots of S5 Ap5 make the other plasma for TEQ killing keep the fusion team and make a MP team.

Flamers on the commander I think wastes his BS5 too since there's no roll to hit with them. Could keep 1 team as the flamer team and give the commander the burst cannons.

just some thoughts

"Quid" is informal for the UK pound so he's got a bit more than $50 to spend (more like $80)
